I have decided to take the plunge this year and get into M/L for deer hunting. After some research, and actually having the guns in hand, I am leaning towards one of the following:

CVA Kodiak
CVA Optima
T/C Omega

I'm looking at nickel finish in the CVAs and SS in the T/C.

Prices range from $259 (Optima with kit), to $399 for the T/C.

My questions are:
1. What would you experienced M/L folks recommend

2. What is a reasonable distance limit to shoot without a scope.

3. What is a recommended lower priced scope.

I have the Omega and would recommend that you seriously consider buying T/C or another full american rifle. The imports are OK but there is always that question as to how well they stand behind the rifle. T/C will back theirs even if you bought it used. Simmons makes some shotgun scopes that work well in fact I have a shotgun simmons on my Omega and it is crystal clear and has collected a couple of elk. Your muzzleloader will shoot about 100 yards well either with or without the scope. Much beyond that and you have to practice a lot (I mean A LOT!!!). I don't have the time for that so even with a scope I limit my shots to 100 yards. Most hunters can get that close unless you are hunting the open fields. Good luck with your decision. You will likely buy the Omega either sooner or later so you might just as well get it now. I bought two before the Omega and two others after. Seems that this sport tends to grow on you.

I would recommend the Omega if the money is not the only object to base your decision on. They are an excellent made rifle, and have a warranty that is second to none, they have better resale.

As for a distance you can shoot with open sights, that will depend on you and how much you are willing to practice. Also your eye sight will make a big difference here. I would not think 125 yards would be out of line with open sights. Also hitting a 2" circle at 100 yards or hitting a 8" kill zone are two different things. Your Omega should be able to shoot a 3" group at 100 yards with the right projectile.

An inexpensive but excellent scope is a Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn with the extended eye relief. 4" eye relief is a good one. Also because you are considering such a quality rifle, get a 3-9X40mm. This will help you with the long distance shooting.

I would agree with both of the above post. If money is not a problem then get the omega. I shot the kodiak and omega before I bought and the both shot about the same. But the fit and finish on the omega is far better than the kodiak.the difference is like comparing a remington 870 and the wingmaster.But don't get me wrong the kodiak while not as nice is still a good rifle. It comes with a lifetime warranty and it shoots great. With 80grains of 777 and a 250 grain havester sabertooth belted bullet I was able to get 50 yd 2"groups.At 50yds with 90 grains of APP and a 295 grain powerbelt aero-tip I was able to shrink that to 1 and3/4 inch groups. I think The rifle likes the APP. I can' wait to get a scope for this gun. And yes my decision was based on price. Good luck with whatever you pick.

On the choices of rifles, the Tc are the better rifle, but your gonna pay more.I own an Optima its shoots very well for me.Its the nickle plated one, its still brite and shiney after two years. I just this year put a Bushnell dusk to dawn scope on it. 100 yrds is max for a deer for me. I prefer 50 to 75 yrds
