Thain,
I've got a 180 that I usually bring up for the summer and hunting season. I've also got lots of buddies with birds in the Anchorage area and also up in Koztebue ( one of my old stomping grounds.)The area that I'm thinking about hunting this year has produced 60+&quot; Moose for my buddies for the last 3 years and one guy killed a 69&quot; moose two years ago but I don't know exactley where it is<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>So in any case I'd love hook up with you some time you have places we have airplanes.

As far as my Stevens .410 with buck shot, well as Robert R said always use enough gun. I just hope it won't be to much!

I do remember something about that recurve hunt. You know if he'd had a .410 with him I bet that bear wouldn't have even gotten near those guys. Bears can tell when there's a threat near.

We'll have to start a .410 fan club, and espouse its virtues far and wide, on a special bulletin board just for buckshot.

E-mail me with any areas you are wondering about, and I'll look into it, their moose population.

I know of several myself, but if you want to know more about an area (like those your friends describe), I'll do the research for you.

My one weakness when it comes to hunting, is that I don't like a crowd. So if you and all your buddies will be going as a group, then I'd better bow out.

However, if you want to do a smaller hunt, with just the two of us, or maybe one other person, then I'm all yours .

The other thing is that we guard our hunting spots like they were secret gold mines. So if we develop a spot together, then it has to be our secret.

I've seen too many fantastic hunting areas ruined because word got out, and they were overwhelmed with too many people. Better to keep the group very small, and each member take an oath of secrecy.

If it's competition they want, I'm sure we could give your other buddies with the 60&quot; bulls, a run for their money

While we're at it, do you want to get caribou, and bear?

I have a several friends up here with Super Cubs, and would be happy to assist me with some preseason scouting.

What are the STOL capabilities and stall speed on that 180. Can you land on sand bars or do you have to use lakes.

I know that o'l O.J. Smith from Umiat use to do some pretty fantastic stuff with his 180.

Thane,
As they say anywhere your brave enough to ride I'm brave enough to fly. Well maybe just about anywhere. I don't do floats insurance is to much. I've got a full horton STOL kit and 28&quot; gar areo tires I do gravel bars primarily. I can't do what a cub can stol wise but I sure can carry more stuff. If I've got between 600 and 1000' depending on terrain and surface conditions we can do just about anything we need to. That's with a load it's less without one.
I'm with you on the big crowds I like to hunt by myself or up in AK with a buddy just in case. Do you fly?

Just as a primary info collection bout how far from home is your Moose hunting area? I'm thinking about fuel gear ETC.
I am no longer an AK resident so I'm not really interested in Bear As I've shot many many Blackies over the years but hey bud I'm always game for a big Caribou Bull. I've never bagged a really spectacular one yet. We used to shoot a lot of them up in Kotzebue in fact I shot two bulls last year. We also saw A very nice Arctic grizz Brown back with blonde sides fairly good sized too. My Buddy had a brown Bear tag but we were never able to close the distance on him.

Thank god I had my Stevens Single shot .410 with me, loaded with #000000 buck! Just in case, you never know what could happen with those unperdictable bruins.

Thane do you live in Anchorage? I've got a spot over on the Lake Hood strip.

With your craft's capabilities, there are plenty of places open to you.

As for flying I am not a pilot, though I have spent so many hours in the air you'de think qualify

I'm in the Wasilla are. Spend a lot of time at Lake Hood though, because my wife works righ there in the DOT building (looks like a giant spider).

In calculating your distances, you give me a radius (from lake hood) that you are comfortable with, and I'll find you a couple of good options. It may be best to do some scouting trips just before making a decision, if you have the time, but I can definately get you into some good areas.

Why don't you drop me an e-mail, so we can discuss more info. Also, I can quickly i.d. any area that you are talking about if you can give me a lat/long, or UTM location.

Do you have Garmin's MapSource software?
