RE: Grizzly Bears
"My buckshot is more powerful than any damn bow."

To a point, I agree. However, theres a long list of successful bowhunters who have taken grizzly, I know of no one whos done it with a shotgun.

Blain, I aint saying it cannot be done, I am saying your shotgun loaded with buckshot is not a primary weapon that anyone would choose to hunt with and theres reasons for that. My post above said

" When we autopsied him later we learned that although my buckshot had not hit a vital organ, some of them had penetrated the body cavity to the stomach and would have killed the bear eventually. Yet he didn't react in any way to those two shots"

Did you ignore that ? SOME shot penetrated halfway into a bear. Though the KE of a shotgun blast is much greater than that of a 750 gr arrow, the pentration ability of the arrow is unquestionably better, no doubts.

I aint arguing with you on it, and yeah, I probably could kick your booty, what I am saying is that I went into the research open minded and came away with one conclusion - only an idiot would go after grizzly with a shotgun loaded with buckshot. Alternate rounds with slug, maybe, if you are archery close, MAYBE. But then, at that point, you might as well just use the more powerful slug anyway.

Yes I did read that and I paid special attention to the part that said "he would have died from that buckshot blast soon after"

Now that was only a 2 3/4" shell with 00 and no good choke. Mine is 3 1/2" of 0000 and a very tight patterning choke, you see? Why else do you think it penetrated 21" into wetphone books?

Hey guys:
Are we talking Self Defense, or Hunting here? If we're talking self defense, then "soon after" doesn't cut it.

I have every confidence in your ability to instantly stop a mad charging wet phonebook with your buck shot...Never even thought to question it

I once had to blast the yellow pages with my .410!!!

RE: Grizzly Bears
Thaninater we both know that there are some phone books that are tougher than others. Now i'd put up a Chicago book against a Tok book any day. Would you want to bet on a Detroit phone book against a Homer phone book? I have to back Blain on the fact that some phone books are right on the borderline of being dangerous. Remember i'm bringing the picknik basket to Blains "FINAL" showdown, we need to keep up our strength for all the laughing that will be happening. I just can't believe that insurance brother in law of mine, won't even talk to me about policies, justs hangs up on me. Oh well there goes the down payment on the ranch.

So you still don't believe me, eh? You doubt me??? Just let me show you what my gun can really do, I think you will be surprised.

Dave:
You've got a good point there...I'd put my money on the LA and NYC phone books over all else.

Blain:
I think I know your strategy now...you sly dog you. You had us all fooled into thinking you were going to take a charging griz head on with your buckshot.

But I'm on to you now. You're really a stealthy kind of dude, and will be putting on a pair of light weight moccasins, and sneaking up really close behind the bear, and shoving that highly compensated, and choked barrel into the nearest orifice, and then pulling the trigger.

You win on this one. That would definitely kill a grizz . Just wish I were half the mountain man you are, and could sneak up that good...i'd try it myself.

No, thats not what was said. What was said was " ...would have killed the bear eventually. Yet he didn't react in any way to those two shots

Big difference there, and you can't sweat the details enough when planning a hunt.

The wet phonebook thing .... man ya'll are too funny on that !!!!

Were a TV show titled "From squirrel to Elephant,
the shotgun is your gun!", and
the first episode featured grizzly,
that would be the last episode. [:d] still chuckling.

RE: Grizzly Bears
I hate it when a topic with a guy asking about hunting grizzly bears (or cape buffalo, or other big game) turns into a "buckshot is great" post. Please just answer Tussey's inquiry and leave it at that.
