A buddy of mine got in on an elk hunt next month in Colorado. He needs advice - he shoots a PSE 70 lb draw, graphite arrows (dont know weight) with 100 grain mechanicals 2" cutting radius. He' s very happy with its performance on deer.
He' s wondering if he needs heavier arrows or move up to 125 grain etc to handle the bigger elk or stick with what he has ?
Thanks!

His set up sounds almost indentical to mine except I use aluminum arrows. As far as the mechanicals I' ve never used them on elk. But everyone I talk to says no mechanicals, fixed blades are the way to go on elk. I use a fix 3 blade 125 gr.

the only thing id change on his setup is his broadhead choice. hed be better off choosing a good fixed blade or cut on contact head. on a quartering shot on an elk those mechanicals may be a liability. elk have heavy bones and on an angle shot i wouldnt trust a mechanical. thats not to say they cant get the job done its just that there are better tools for the job out there.

I agree tell him to stick with the 100 gr head and choose a good fixed head design to match. I am heading up for Elk in 5 days and have choosen the Steelforce Premium 100 Gr-2blades as my elk medicine, coupled with a 27.5" Carbon Express 300 arrow moving at close to 300FPS, i feel it will be an excellent combo to take down an elk. BTW, the steelforce fly right with my field points to 45 yards and extremely sharp! Another good head to look at is the Magnus Stinger, this like the steelforce premium is a cut on impact head and fly' s very true as well. In fact had I not ran into a supplier issue with the magnus stinger head I would be using it, but after shooting the steelforce I am very impressed and won' t be looking any farther, if they perform how I think they should!
Other fixed heads to consider are: Montec G5' s, Muzzy & Thunderheads.

Please loose the mechanical heads. The other stuff is probably fine as long as he isn' t trying to use ultra light arrows. Like IBO minimum. If he is using really light arrows then I would also advise that he go to a heavier arrow of at least 420 grains, 6 grains per pound.
If he simply must use a mechanical then use a small cutting radius, like a steel head, and definetly not the two inch one that he is using now.
