I guess we have both had similar experiances except yours was with a rifle and mine was with a shotgun. Me and my grandfather were hunting with a group of people running dogs. Me and him were sitting about 200 yards from each other and a couple guys down from him. Deer ran across a field and one of the guys down from him decided to take a shot at the deer. He might have been killed had he not been siting behind a huge oak tree. The pellets hit the tree he was sitting behind , hit the cattle fence he was sitting next to, and continued all the way up to where I was sitting and past. Thankfully neither one of us were hit. I was about 350 yards from the guy that made the shot and could have easily been hit had I been standing just a little more in front of where I was.

Needless to say that' s a big reason why i do not like running dogs and big drive hunts. That was the last time.

Yes I took physics in high school. I also know the odds of being hit are much greater when you have more than one projectile flying through the air. Yes this thread is about slug only areas but just about anywhere that a shotgun with slug is legal so is buck shot. At least the places I have hunted.

Something else just came to mind, if you add in carbines because they are in pistol calibers, you can' t just limit it to leverguns, you' d have to extend it to any/all pistol caliber chambered arms, i.e. Semiautos like the Ruger Deerfield, bolts like the Ruger 77/44, single shots, etc., you' d never get it to stick saying you can use this action with these rounds, but not the same round in this action, and then you' ll have people complaining everyday that a .44mag in a bolt gun or a .454cassul has the same power as say a levergun .30-30, which should have been in since leverguns were legalized first. Or a .44mag deerfield has the same capabilities as a SKS, it' d just be impossible to keep things the way you added them, you know, give someone an inch and they' ll take a mile, offer them pistol cartridge leverguns and they' ll want all pistol cartridges, which gives them bolts and semis, give them those and they' ll have a good arguement that there are rifle cartridges similarly powered in the same actions that are legal, so they should be legal too, and then things will just spiral up to the point that everything' s legal, which I' m not saying is a bad thing, but they don' t want that, so in order to keep that from happening, they don' t give you any rifles.

Are contenders legal? I' m fairly certain you can still buy conversions that would allow your " handgun" to add on a full stock and a full bbl, you might get by on a technicality that way. At any rate, the contender would let you use a rifle cartridge.

Thanks for the input. I still feel there is justification for being able to use " carbines" in slug only areas. When I refer to a carbine I am taliking about any rifle chambered for a pistol round. Lever, bolt, semi-auto or single shot and pump. If we are talking about range then look at .22lr around 1.5 miles. Some of the newer muzzleloaders, especially .45 cal guns w/ sabots can reach out farther than most of us would use the 30/30 for. As far as the second amendment it assures us the right to own guns not to get to hunt with them.

here are some reasons I think this would be good:

1. Better inherrant accurracy
2. less recoil for new hunters, women, and children
3. Better bullets
4. Faster follow up shots- if needed
5. These carbines are easier for small and young people to carry, they fit them better, allowing more diversity in hunting.

Also here in Indiana we to can go afield and kill coyotes with any centerfire rifle.
I think I will use my .35 whelen this February[>:]

but yet I can' t hunt deer with anything but a shotgun? doesn' t make any sense to me.
In some instances it probably is fine, but I wouldn' t doubt that somewhere down the line you will find some one using " slug only" as a starting point for Gun Control. It is something we as hunters can believe the saftey factor and get duped into it w/ out knowing?[:@]
