Well here go's ...does the ability to handle recoil make U a man?? in U're eyes?? Is that the only reason U thinkU need a big gun so U can brag about how hard it kicks???? If thats the case U should be shooting a .460 weatherby or a .458 lott!!!!!! And no place here have I said I don't have a magnum nor did I sayI was afraid to shoot one!!! I just said U don't need a magnum to hunt elk .....I merly said a .270 was more than adequate to get the job done!!!! not marginal......U run into me up in the hilss I might be carrying anything from a 30-30 to a .338 depending on where I'm hunting, deep timber or open sagebrush...but most likey I'll have my trusty old .300 H&H!!!

Yep,they kill them with 243's too! It is certainly a high powered rifle.
But he asked our opinion, and that is what we are giving him. He didn't ask for a pissing match, but that is what this question always seems to bring out too. LOL.
How about it shooter: which side of the fence are you leaning toward?

WOW.....I guess I kicked over not just the can of worms but the entire freezer at the bait shop!!!! Didnt mean to get anyone wound up!!
Anyway....there is some good advice in here amongst the ball busitng
1. Im a fan of the right tool right place....I am going to spend good money to go play in the hills...so i dont want to have to "pass" up a chance.
2. I dont like to bust up a perfectly good animal for the 'yotes and bears to find...F' them get thier own!
3. I did buy the Encore for versitility.....so with that said I will be adding a .300 to the collection.
I appeciate the input guys it just seemed like everytime the .270 is discussed everyone had a "but and if" asscocaited with it. I will tell you what will happen...Im going to buy a .300 and will kill one at oh...60yds..thats just how it happens for me
Im a deer hunter....and have piled up more then my share....Im clueless about elk. So believe me I do thank you guys!
shooter....but feel free....carry on with the ball breaking...its entertaining!

You already have the .270 Winchester (which is the minimum caliber that can be used here in Kentucky). It will work fine...Invest in quality ammo witha premium 150 grain bullet...think Nosler Partition, Swift A-frame, Hornady Interbond, etc. Stay away from 130 grain loads and fragile bullets...also avoid the Winchester Powerpoint, Silvertip, and the Remington Core-lokt.Consider looking into the Light Magnum loads.
The .300 would give you more horsepower and the ability to consider more oblique angles, but from my experience, any of those bullets will exit an elk on a broadside shot...not sure of how much more horsepower the ground on the far side needs...
