Of course a 270win will kill elk, just as a 25-06 will with the proper bullet and the proper bullet placement. However,I much prefer a 300win mag over any 270win for my elk hunting.

I am on the side of saluki: Keep the 270, and get the 300. That is what I would do. The cost over the next 10+ years is negligable.
If I had to choose one caliber though, it would be an 06. I have never had one until I won one this year. You have SO many choices. I am currently shooting the Remington reduced recoil 125 gr ammunition. That is the equivalent of a243, and Ihad somekids andgirls shoot it this year with great success. Then you can jump to to 150, 165, or 180 gr bullets. There are some premium, high energy bullets that are equal to the 300.
It would take a lot to ever make me give up my 270, but if I could only have one gun, it would be a 30-06.

shooter1966,
I have both and prefer the .300 for elk. As a poor college kid, a .300 was my only centerfire. Used to use it on everything, including prairie dogs. Got a little older....bought a few more guns, but, I still prefer the .300.
Yup, bullet placement is critical as is bullet selection.

Here it is again!!!! LOL!!!!!!! Folks seem to think U need a magnum for elk....what a crock!!!!!!! shooter1966, the .270 has killed 10's of thoushands of elk and quite handily at that!!! folks on here keep up with the words bullet placement and range!!! well I would hope that, that would go with out saying!!LOL!!!! BUT I know that there are some out there that DO rely on the extra little ummpf that they get from the magnum,s to make up for their short comings as shooters!!! bigger is not allways better!!! keep U're .270 and go kill an elk!!!!!

If you have a .270 that you are shooting good, get the right bullets and go for it.However, if you have the dough and want the enjoyment of owning a bigger caliber, then get one. I hunt elk with a 300 RUM, and it is my elk rifle of choice. Elk hunting is so much more than the gun you carry. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I've used a .270 very successfully on deer, ELK, Alaskan Moose, Kudu, Zebra, Sable, Caribou, Pronghorns, Dall Sheep, and other animals.
I'll be hunting in South Africa this summer and may very well be using a .270 to shoot an 1,800 pound Eland. It'll work fine for elk if you use quality bullets that are heavy for caliber, like 140s and 150s; pick your shots wisely and know when to pass on a shot.

" pick your shots wisely and know when to pass on a shot."
Everyone should use what they want to and feel comfortable with. After all, there are guys that only shoot critters with a bow, and you really have to pick your shots and pass on many with a bow.
And there is also nobody here that will deny that taking a standing, broadside shot through the heart/lungs on an elk with a 270 at 100 yards will kill ANY elk walking as well and as fast as any caliber out there. But what those of us who feel that something bigger is better for elk (and not just the ones who have "shortcomings as shooters") are trying to say, is that when that elk takes that unexpected step, or turns at the last minute, or is 325 yards away.... we would prefer to have a little more ummph to insure being able to take that shot with more confidence.
To say it another way, there are MANY that hunt with a 270 for elk successfully and extol it virtues. However, ask the same people if they had a 270 or a 300 side by side in their hands, and the world record bull stepped out, which gun would they reach for? I use the same criteria even when I am "only" hunting for a cow.

So what. Why should any body care if some one uses a magnum or not. What skin is off your nose if some one likes a .300 rum. Instead of attacking someones shooting skills, share withus some advantages of using the .270 over a magnum for elk.
