Looking for info on Units 10 & 12 in Idaho.
I' m going to try hunting Idaho for the first time in Units 10 & 12 (Lolo B) with the hope of getting familiar enough with the area to try bowhunting for elk in the following years. I' ve heard that Unit 10 is in real bad shape with the numbers of elk way down. But I' ve heard alot of mixed messages about Unit 12. Any info any one has is always a plus!

Sanman,
I have hunted unit 12 and unit 17 (just south). I believe 10 would be very similar country. It' s steep mouantains with thick forests. The first thing I would say is tough hunting. The game seems to be scattered and since it is totally forested hard to glass. However, no doubt there are elk in there and there are some monsters. The thick forest protects them and they grow old. It' s almost all public land and you will not have to worry about getting permission of paying tresspass fees. It will not be crowded at all. Another positive is as you know tags are over the counter. Have fun.

I would say stick to unit 12, its not in too bad of shape, but 10 is a disaster. Fish and Game figures there might be 2,600 elk in the whole unit. Last year they figure twice that and well ten years ago over 10,000 elk there. Calf recruitment is very low in 10 lots of wolves, old habitat, bears, and other things at work there.
