perfect caliber for wife?

Nothing wrong with a 30-06 shooting 180 grain slugs. She isn't going to be able to take a 300+ yd shot, but then why would anybody IMHO?
winmag300, as far as recoil between the wsm and standards given most are in light packages and assuming your wife may want something a little lighter chances are the recoil will be very close. I have shot a T3 Lite in a 300wm and 300wsm they are the same weight/style and the difference to my shoulder was minimal, if at all.IMHO if she doesn't like your win mag the 300wsm will be no kinder.[&:] Do you reload? If so may I suggest a 280 rem, little faster then the 3006 but same level of recoil as it and the 270win, it will allow you to load it up for elk/moose or down for deer sized game and a faster/flatter load. If you don't reload the 3006may be the option or if you think she can handle a little more punch the 7mm rem mag.
I like the 7mm 08 as well, it is a dream to shoot my wife (who doesn't hunt) can handle it with ease at 5.0' but around here factory ammo suitable for the larger game maybe an issue...though it certainly would be worth looking into if your at all interested in this cartridge. As a reloader it can do what the other .284's will do just a little slower so would be another choice if you roll your own!
An addition of a aftermarket recoil pad or buying a rifle that has one already installed (like rem does now on a number of models (R3 - aka sims) will do a lot to help ease felt recoil. Personally I would avoid a breaked rifle - LOUD. You mustplan to wear ear protection everytime it may be fired (field or range), as a single shot may result in perm. hearing damage.
Good luck

Thanks for all the input guys. 7mm , no i dont reload, id like to get into it, my neighbor does and if i bought the dyes im sure he would allow me to use his set up. And yes there are times that we have shot in excess of 450 yrds and been successul here. My own moose shots from experience have all been over 320 yrds, other guys have been so lucky as to get them at only 20 yrds! I know a few old timers that swear by the 30-06 and have used it in Alaska on moose and it performed. Im definately gonna have to get her some range time and try these suggestions out, if anybody else has more, keep them coming, im always interested. Has anybody on here ever used the new T/CIcon in the new caliber .30 T/C?? I was just wondering what that caliber could do?

About 20 years ago my father let one of his good friends use his (at the time, mine now) Winchester model 88 in 308 Win.to hunt moose in Maine. They sighted it in with 180 gr. Remington Core Lokts. His friendshot his moose in the lungsat around50 yards. The moose only ran 50 yards or so after the shot. I'm not saying the 308 Win. is an ideal moose cartridge, but under the right conditions and in the right hands, it will work.A 280 Rem. might be worth taking a look at too.

My 300 WSM is a sweety.Easier on the shoulder than the 300 ultra.Undersize it and shoot for a Encore with a 30-06 barrel or an H&R 30-06...It only takes 1 bullet. Good Luck!
By the way - just bought an H&R nickel with a silver leoupold. The 22 inch barrel had be wondering.Tack driver no problem at 200 yards. My wife shoot a single shot rifle...she loves it.

How about a semiauto in 30-06? The semiauto action willreduce the recoil a little. 165 bullets will get the job done. Maybe the 180s for moose. Add a Sims recoil pad and she will not notice the recoil, promise.

The .30-06 is the obvious choice!A remington 7600 is a great pump action, or a remington 700 if she likes bolt action. both are decently priced rifles! and I love both of them

30-06,25-06,.308,270 are allgood choices and will do the job. come crunch time when her heart is pounding she wont notice the recoil. I shoot a 12 gauge marlin 512 slugmaster here in maryland for deer. It kicks like a mule while shooting on the range. But when there's a nice buck in front of me I've never noticed any recoil. Maybe my hearts beating to much to notice any recoil.
