Default Montana regulations.......

Ok, for those of you who hunt Montana here are a few bones I got with FWP. First off, why do they need to hold on to our money for two-three months before they draw? I don't see any interest comming my way. Secondly, and this is a big gripe of mine, why don't they post quota's before the freakin application deadline! Last year I missed out on my antelope hunt when it was almost a 100% chance of draw, the quota went way down and I didn't know until after I had apllied for that area. Thirdly, how can you plan a hunt when it's late July or August before they draw? Finally, and this is for you Montana Bob, how can they only allot 150 tags for the entire 270 district? Last year it was only 75! I can drive through 270 in the evening and see dozens of nice muley bucks.[:@]

I agree it would be nice to know before August to plan your hunts. It was nice last week to get $150 bucks for my sons and my unsucessful moose tags. I bought some archery stuff I needed. What chaps my a$$ about the 270 muley tags is they give landowner prefrence. That is stupid for deer depredation. Actually I heard you one guy split his eastfork ranch into 4 pieces for his wife and sons and they get more muley bucks tags or drawing chances that way. I personaly have never looked into this but have heard it from a pretty reliable source. They shouldn't change the regs after you apply. A buddy of mine put in for an area a few years ago that they just misprintd the info, of course so did a lot of others and he was pissed when he never got drawn and they went to a lot lower number of tags being given out. Good luck this fall, I think I will spend more time in the westfork this year then the eastfork. 2point

The length of time they hold your money is simple, they earn a ton of interest on it and they will not change that. The reason that they don't post the quota until after the application is because they don't do their counts and survey until after June. I don't like it either but try to get them to change it and you will get tired of banging your head on that wall.

Landowner preference is set aside for 10% of the total tags. It is not guaranteed every year. There will always be those lucky few who draw all the time. I know a guy who has drawn a rifle bull elk tags in 622 four times in 10 years.

I agree with Nemont, they make a TON of money off our money. As for the drawings I never wait for the quotas,I have my areas I put in for every year and never change.
I usally go off last year's quota, and number off hunters per reigon, their counts are never right anyway they are a rough estimation. We always hunted the area around Gibson Dam and Agusta I think 424 is the area and they set the quota for a few years at75 Either sexanimals, the next year they have a animal explosion and set the quota at 400 + animals.Well duh!! the elk never left the high country cause the winter never got bad enough, instead of having 1500 elk on the game range they have 4000+.
Like I said I keep putting in for a quality area and one year I will draw.

That is close to what it is like here in Nevada, except we get our results in June. We apply between Mid March to Mid April for all species. The results are out the second Friday of June. Only problem is we don't know what the quotas will be either. They don't finish the counts until around earlly April, then have to go through the entire process of getting the quotas approved, which doesn't get done until about Mid May, then they do the drawing, and the second week of June, start sending stuff out. That still gives you time to plan even with the early opening of the Archery deer, cow elk, and antelope hunts in August. It used to be you didn't apply until the counts were done and quotas set, but then you wouldn't get the results back until the end of July, which would only give youa couple of weeks in some cases to plan your hunt.

I here ya. I have my spotting scope set up looking over there and see herds of Elk and Mulies.
I try every year for the 270 area and no luck.

Thats what pisses me off too. Not them keeping my money for several months, but for waiting so long in getting the imformation out so that some preperation can be made to plan a hunt. Just like the BLM's, imformation on them don't come out till Aug. Thats when my 900 tag starts. They need to get their act together a little faster so that we can make proper preperations.
