Team 1 ~ Beard Bandits

Ok here's the story and pictures of bird #2 I got this morning back at my land. We've been planting 20 acres of corn the past 2 years so he was a fat one at 20.5 lbs. Beard was 11.5" and both spurs were just 1".
This morning I decided to go back to one of our small tracts and try to get on a bird that gobbled his butt off at me earlier in the season only to pitch down and go the other way. I tried that spot and heard nothing but wind, so I headed over to another spot and walked around a bit trying to make something gobble. The woods were silent there also, so I got in the truck and drove straight down to the fields. Since it was rather windy I just went ahead and headed towards a blind I have set up. Halfway down the road and ran into a group of hens in the road about 70 yards out. They looked like they were about to spook since I was wide out in the open, and even started putt'n like they were about to take off. I stuck that fan up in front of me and crouched down and they all stopped putt'n and went back to feeding. After a few minutes they all eased up into the woods and I walked on towards the blind. Before I got inside I went out in front of the blind about 20 yards and stuck the fan up in between some corn stalks and yelped a few times on my box call to cut through the wind. I had sat there for 20 minutes with no action and had just texted my buddy to tell him he wasn't missing anything. Not 5 minutes later I started hearing a strutter drumming to my right about 50 yards and out of view. I got on the slate and started giving him some cluck n purrs with some soft yelps mixed in. He drummed about every 8 seconds for nearly 15 minutes til I finally got a gobble out of him. After he gobbled, a hen showed up and walked right in front of me from right to left, followed by 5 big ol jakes. They checked out my fan a little bit and kept easing down the road until they stopped about 20 yds to the left. About that time I saw big boy's head bobbing through the corn at probably 60 yards out coming from the right. Right when the fan was between me and him, it finally caught his eye and he blew up and started drumming again. Once he saw it he was coming the whole way, and when he got to 30 yards I put him on the ground with the 870 and a 3.5" win supreme #5. Another great hunt where it just all came together. Two birds in two days.....I'll take it! That's it for me boys, now it's on to packing up and getting into my new house in a couple weeks. Glad I was able to get outta my slump and pitch in this year!

Once again great job SS! 2 Birds in two days thats gettin it done in a hurry. I had a tough hunt this morning, the hardest I have ever worked without a bird in the truck. Got set up at 5:45,hens roosting a bit close for comfort,70 to 80 yards. No Tom with them. 6:15 a Gobble 500 yards to my right,I waited to make sure one was not with the hens, notta. Took off toward the loud mouth, closed to 150 yards,he was loud and proud. Every time I called he got louder, but he would not come. Crossed the creek closed to within 80 yards,he was still hammering but would not move. Move 20 yards closer could not get any closer to thick. He was still hammering, I went silent,he gobbled a couple of more times. Then he was gone,I hoped he was finally coming to me,so I got ready looking for any movement through the heavy brush. Nothing sat there for 15 minutes total silence, game over. Thats the totallity of my day,no bird.

Weather Underground is just about the best site for forecasting. It even gives an hourly forecast of the barometric pressure, that's what I like. Yesterday and today the pressure was over 30.34 in. Highest it's been all turkey season. They didn't gobble good at all this morning but I think that was due solely to the high winds where I was hunting. But when I got down in the bottoms it was pretty calm at times and the turkeys were all around cruising the fields. It wasn't a great day for gobbling but the turkeys were really active it seemed. I saw 4 or 5 along the roadside on the way out. I'm glad I got out of bed, but you know it could've gone either way. Just happened to be a good day for me.

As I check how the team is doing each day the pressure is building up on me to get a bird. You guys are doing a bang up job,and I can't seem to get a bird closer than 60 to 70 yards. It happened again today but this time he came in silent, eyed my decoys and went back into the woods. Even a Jake came by and stuck his beak up at my decoys. Had 2 hens as well come by. I think I'm not going to put decoys out for my next few hunts, just maybe they will get closer than 60 or 70 yards. Pressing on none the less,Indiana birds in our area are giving everyone fits these past few days.

You'll get him doetrain, just stay positive and hunt where you think you have the best shot at seeing birds. Sounds like you got the birds pinned down and it's only a matter of time. Your luck can change just like that bud, just keep at em. What kind of decoy setup are you using?

Spank Em!
