Great job Rack! Always nice to get a shot at something.

Robow, tell your son congrats!! Even without a kill that sounds like a very successful and smart hunt on his part. The thrill and excitement is all that matters. There can be alot of "I wish she would've" "I could've" or what ifs, but she was there, he prepped himself, and he with-drew. Still alot of courage to think about making the wise shot. In my eyes he was successful!!!! Congrats to Connor!!

Centauri 09-27-2011 02:37 PM

Texting and hunting saves lives... Missed a 6 pointer because I didn't see it in time :(

Thanks Mottz that means a lot. My only regret is I was caught up in the moment. I didn’t film his reaction and our discussion afterward about waiting for an ethical shot. Oh well I guess that’s just me being a dad.

RackLuster 09-28-2011 07:50 PM

hoping to get some hunting done in wisconsin this weekend. i have lots of other stuff to do so i may not hunt as much as i'd like. good luck this weekend everyone.

Robow45 09-29-2011 03:10 AM

Hunting in Ohio tomorrow morning!! :barmy:

Mottz 09-29-2011 03:54 AM

Good luck in Wisconsin Rack! Why you're there you can watch the Huskers kick Wisconsins' butt.

Good luck Robow!! Get one down for us.

I'll be out this weekend. Crops are starting to come out fast here. Hopefeully down in my hunting area.

RackLuster 09-30-2011 06:04 PM

passed on a basket 6 tonight at my inlaw's. him and a button buck spent about 20 minutes within 10 yards of me. also they were downwind of me within about 60 yards for a long time and never smelled me. i was surprised! another great hunt though. When i saw him coming i thought he was one of the 2 nicer bucks hanging around their property. oh well. long season yet. heading to wisconsin to hunt tomorrow afternoon and sunday morning. should be fun.

kellyguinn 09-30-2011 06:30 PM

Opening day here in the morning!!! I'll be headed out at about 3am to kick it off. Mainly scouting but the bow will be in hand so maybe lady luck will be on my side. I'm just glad to have an excuse to get out there and away from work again for a few days. Good luck to all who are out!!

fshafly2 10-01-2011 03:18 AM

Good story with your son Robow - something that can't be experienced sitting behind a computer, lol.
Centauri, tough break, I've had a deer or two or more escape because I was dozing off.

We getting set for a cool spell here, maybe the action will pick up.

Mottz 10-02-2011 09:34 AM

Very slow in the deer woods today. Nothing much on cams either. Need to get some crops out.

Oh, and could we all just forget that line about the Huskers beating up on the Badgers?? It would be greatly appreciated:happy0001:

fshafly2 10-02-2011 04:12 PM

The cooler weather has deer moving around here. I went into an oak grove yesterday afternoon, and spooked out an modest 8 ptr (non-shooter) who was already in there with another buck. I had a few young does come in range the last 1/2 hr - maybe next time they won't be so lucky. My cams showed other deer moving in the late afternoon.

kellyguinn 10-02-2011 07:02 PM

Saw a couple bucks that would have been good for me but unfortunatly they saw me first..lol I was checkin out the turkeys flyin up to the roost while the bucks were checkin me out from 15 yards out thru some pretty tall grass. I was huntin off the ground without a blind.

I didn't get out there Sat morning. The wife had a blow out friday night and tore the front end up of her car pretty good. We didn't get it towed back till after 4am. Then to top the weekend off right I got a flat tire on the truck while leaving the public land.

I think I have used all my bad luck up for this season so I should be up great one.. ;)

Mottz 10-02-2011 07:07 PM

Just refer to those as minor set-backs.:happy0157:

RackLuster 10-02-2011 07:49 PM

my truck wasn't cooperating w/ me either. i broke down saturday afternoon on the side of the highway. had it towed, got a loaner, and still had time to drive to wisconsin and hunt for a little while. didn't see anything in 3 hunts in wisconsin. it was friggin hot today, that didn't help much. hoping for some cooler weather...

Arjuna 10-03-2011 12:04 PM

great attitude, Kellyguinn. May your season be filled with great and pleasant surprises to compensate for the negative ones!

Robow45 10-04-2011 05:49 AM

Ohio 11 point

Saturday night this guy came in. It was my night to film for my pal. We both agreed that he needs one more year.

RackLuster 10-04-2011 05:03 PM

robow - that's a really nice buck to pass on. he'd be on my wall.

Arjuna 10-04-2011 05:53 PM

If you were the big bad wolf from little red riding hood, I would say, "My, what a big "restraint" you have!" wow...I agree with Rackluster...I think I would have shot him....but then, you did so with your camera. I'm glad u had fun!

Mottz 10-04-2011 07:04 PM

I would have had a hard time letting him walk. He's a nice one but I agree, if he makes it this year he will be one to watch for next year.

fshafly2 10-05-2011 02:11 AM

May the deer gods bless you for your restrain robow!

The Navy Base finally opened up and I got out Monday afternoon in the eab area. I had a 3 1/2 yr 8 pt feed in the red oaks at 15 yds, but I didn't have a doe yet, and he was not a herd bull anyway.

-fsh

Robow45 10-05-2011 04:36 AM

If we didn’t have trail cam pics of older bucks we’d probably shoot him. In Ohio you have only one buck tag so he gets one more year. It’s also a lot easier to pass on a borderline buck when you’re filming hunts. Now we can show the guys at camp what walked by.

kellyguinn 10-05-2011 04:52 PM

That is a nice one Robow but he will most definatly be a great one next year!

I'm headed back out either tomorrow night or Friday morning. Only problem is there is 100% chance of rain all weekend. I see lots of time in the blind in my near future. Do yall have any good idea's on how to stay dry when its 80 degrees and raining. I have all the gear for when its 50 and below but nothing that is not insulated..lol Thinkin about trying to find a pair of frogg toggs or something similar.

Brent B 10-06-2011 07:52 AM

While spreading manure this morning I saw 5 rubs on a tree line. I haven't seen many deer here in ohio yet... going back home this weekend to bad it's gonna be be 80 degrees.

Got a picture of this 6 point at home in Indiana.

fshafly2 10-06-2011 08:50 AM

I've been seeing scrapes too Brent.

Mostly fawns, a few does, and dink bucks on the cams.

I hunted this morning and had a big bodied deer go close by ~15 min before legal time. I was hoping the deer would stay and feed on the acorns, no luck...

Robow45 10-06-2011 10:43 AM

I saw a few small rubs in Ohio last weekend.
We just picked up a small piece of land less than a mile from my office! :barmy: It’s in an urban area and buts up to a bigger piece that has monsters taken off it almost every year. I am pumped! Now I can be in the tree stand within a few minutes after I leave work and be hunting some big boys!!

Centauri 10-06-2011 06:43 PM

And we can win this contest! I'll be going back out when it gets cooler. I don't like hunting when its 80 degrees :(

Mottz 10-06-2011 07:01 PM

I'm hoping to get out this weekend. Its been about a month with no rain and starting tomorrow there is now a 90% throughout the weekend. Put with that 30 mph winds and that makes it pretty crappy. If the winds die down and I can catch a window of no rain then I'll be out. Crops have been coming out quick with the nice weather but this system will slow that down a little.

RackLuster 10-07-2011 05:26 PM

went out tonight. had a doe and fawn pass by at 10 yards. that was pretty cool. they were bedded down wind about 30 yards away in a swamp. going to try the same spot in the morning. then won't hunt there for a couple weeks.

RackLuster 10-08-2011 05:39 AM

Passed on a little 5 pt at 10 yards this morning. He's bedded about 30 yards behind me right now. Rains coming.

Mottz 10-08-2011 07:57 PM

Well the weather guy was saying that with this system going through, we could've received up to 6 inches of rain. We may have 3/4 of an inch. So if its going to get to 6 then tomorrow is going t be very wet. But I'm heading out anyways. I wasted a whole day today because of the forecast. And all we got was sprinkles. The weather man better hope he doesn't walk under my treestand tomorrow:poke:

Mottz 10-09-2011 08:42 AM

Should've slept in. Didn't see a thing today.

fshafly2 10-09-2011 02:27 PM

I've never shot a deer in bed except in my dreams Mottz, lol. Just keep at it and pay your dues.

I've got a couple of spots that are very promising and will be hunting tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Robow45 10-10-2011 09:57 AM

Pretty warm up here. Nothing like sweating through your camo

kellyguinn 10-10-2011 12:24 PM

Back from the long wet weekend. The deer just arn't movin here yet. I did see a group of 4 8 pt'ers yesterday morning but they stayed just on the private side of the fence about 30 yrds from me. Other than that is was pretty quiet and WET all weekend. Oh I did have a coon almost climb up my leg this morning, If I didn't twitch my foot I think the little bugger would have went right up it.

Brent B 10-11-2011 01:57 AM

Saw 8 deer over the weekend at home in Indiana. Surprisingly the does were moving pretty good. Still gonna be 2 or 3 weeks before the big boys start rollin but I was starting to find some buck sign in about every woods. Yesterday I put up 4 trail cams all on mock scrapes so I should have some pretty decent pictures here in a couple weeks. Harvest is pretty much going full tilt around here. We just started our beans yesterday. I believe the corn will come off right in time for the rut as long as it stays dry. Hopefully it gets cold someday lol good luck this week guys.

fshafly2 10-11-2011 01:58 AM

I hunted Monday morning and afternoon, but the only deer I saw were ones bumped going to my stands, and a dink buck passing through.

RackLuster 10-11-2011 06:48 AM

i'm about sick of this 75-80 degree weather. not normal for central minnesota this time of year. if it cools off this weekend i will be in wisconsin hunting hard. got pics of 2 small bucks fighting (about 20 pics). that was cool that they tussled right in front of my cam in daylight.

no 2.5 year old buck picks since probably early august on my land! i've only had my land since late 06 but i've never had a year that was this crappy for pictures. my food plots look better than ever too. too many dang acorns, they crunch under my feet w/ every step.

we're about due to get our first buck down. i keep expecting to see some pictures on this thread :) maybe this weekend.

Mottz 10-12-2011 03:24 PM

Finally, after a month we got some decent rain. Maybe that will wash away some of the scent that I have left in the area? At least thats what I'm hoping. Somehow these deer got my number but with rain, temps dropping and the winds finally starting to switch, I think it may be a good future. Hopefully this weekend!!

RackLuster 10-12-2011 06:08 PM

had a cortisone shot in my shoulder on monday. not feeling well right now. i'm hoping it will feel better by this weekend. also had surgery to remove a rib a couple months ago (related to shoulder problems). 3rd year in a row w/ a shoulder related surgery before the season. looking at another surgery after the season. ugh!!!! is there a crossbow contest i can join next year :). I'm just in a crabby mood, i need to get out and do some hunting!

good luck this weekend guys. i have hunting trips planned every weekend from now until thanksgiving....hope my wife isn't reading this message board. if so, SURPRISE!! haha!

Brent B 10-13-2011 01:58 AM

Saw a 2.5 year old buck last night. He hung up about 40 yards from me best I could tell he was wide as his ears. Stood there 15 or 20 min and then headed south. At that point he was just a blob walking. Also have 2 rubs and a scrape 20 yards from my tree. The action is heating up I think these deer know there is gonna be some cold weather in the near future.

Thinking about doing some rattling next week. I got a set of primos rattling horns over the summer. Something new to experiment with.

Rackluster good luck with your shoulder. I'm pretty sure one of the guys that entered a buck in this contest this year had a crossbow in the picture lol.
