Mottz 10-29-2011 09:45 AM

Had a 3x3 right in my shooting lane at 15 yards. But he got a pass. At least I'm getting some sort of action though. Did get some good pics so I know they are still there.

fshafly2 10-29-2011 04:07 PM

Mottz, good that the action is picking up.

I had the misfortune of missing a doe @10yds when my string snagged the safety harness belt that comes over my shoulder, :( , missed her by 2 feet! I spent some time shooting at steep angles in a stand and hopefully have fixed the problem.

I've got another doe tied to a tree in a small oak flat where the red oaks are dropping, I'll be looking for her tomorrow...

missed an 8 on Thursday evening.... sorry dudes....believe me, no on is more upset about than me. I saw 8 bucks, 3 fawns, and 6 does.... Two of the bucks were HUGE 8's but never came closer than 70 yards. I was a guest at a friend's club...I don't think I will be invited back!

Mottz 10-30-2011 07:36 AM

fsh, go find that tied up doe. I try to net mine so they can't move:happy0157:

Arjuna, tough luck man!! You'll get one. They'll probably let you come back thinkin you can't hit anything:happy0157:

fshafly2 10-30-2011 12:59 PM

Tough luck Arj - get back on that horse...

My partner saw 4 bucks headed to the choke point I was in, one a shooter. I had a dink 5 and a modest 8 pass right by, just got a brief glimpse of the shooter before he turned away.

Well, the "tied-up" doe was there - she didn't make it 30 yds.

Nice Job fsh!!

I feel your pain Arjuna

So, ripley was a big bust. i saw: 2 does, 13 hunters (from my stand), and at least 50 scrapes. I’ve hunted there for over 10 years and this is least the deer have moved. The previous hunt, the week before, had a great hunt. Only 91 deer were shot the first day (out of 2500 hunters). Leaving for wisconsin in the morning.

nice doe fsh, even better picture!

robow - i can't watch the video at work, looks like a beautiful buck though. hopefully you'll get another crack at him.

fshafly2 10-31-2011 05:38 PM

Robow - ouch, thanks for sharing your misfortune.
Too bad about Ripley, RL, good luck in Wisc.

I watched an awesome buck make 5 scrapes tonight, but he was never closer than 40 yds and he all but ignored my grunts. No telling if I'll ever see him again, but I'm going to spend most of the day in the woods tomorrow on pins and needles... (and the rest of the week, lol).

Canuck_2 10-31-2011 06:08 PM

A hearty congratulations on the doe, fsh. And good luck on that buck; if anyone can do it, I believe you're the one.

Mottz 10-31-2011 06:44 PM

Even though you didn't get him Robow, that was a pretty exciting video. Hope he comes back for your decoy!

Good luck fsh. I want to see the guy you're talking about on the ground!

Good luck in Wisconsin Rack!

fshafly2 11-01-2011 03:46 PM

I had a 2-1/2 yr 9 ptr at 12 yds this am, plus several does in range over the course of the day. Two other bucks came thru to harass the does, but the big un never showed. Good time to be out in the woods guys...

Mottz 11-01-2011 05:26 PM

dang fsh, I wish I had the opportunity to pass on all these deer that you are.

the new camera, in fact, will take pictures of bucks. Let's see what I can get in its view over the next few weeks....

Centauri 11-02-2011 06:47 PM

Shot a 6 pointer yesterday. I made a good shot in the lungs but it didn't leave too much of a blood trail and it ran onto the neighbors land who won't let me get him. Coyote food I guess :(

Arjuna 11-02-2011 07:54 PM

dude...that stinks... Did you know that he wouldn't let you on his land before you hunted there?...just curious...I've never had that happen. Most folks want you to get your wounded deer.

fshafly2 11-03-2011 12:54 AM

Centauri - ditto, that sucks. That situation of no trespass can arise in MD. In that case, the hunter is advised to contact DNR for assistance in gaining access - but no guarantees.

-fsh

Centauri 11-03-2011 01:22 PM

I didn't know since it is my first year hunting there. In Wisconsin if its on somebody else's land, they have every right to deny you entrance.

Mottz 11-03-2011 02:28 PM

Sorry to hear that Cent! You know what is stupid about that is if they are hunting on their land, they probably think its alright to come onto your land to find one of their deer. If a person is tracking a wounded animal I see no problem with lending a helping hand! Or lending temporary "trespassing"

RackLuster 11-03-2011 03:59 PM

Centauri

The deer isn't his. Call the dnr for help.

Mottz 11-05-2011 01:00 PM

Heading out in the morning and then I have all day Wednesday off work to hunt. Got some nice daytime pics on trail cams when I went scouting my crops situation this morning. Hopefully something will payoff.

Mottz 11-05-2011 01:03 PM

Those last 2 are about 10 yards from my stand and tomorrow there will be a decoy in use. Crossing my fingers!! I would've been there yesterday but the will was wrong. I never would've seen those 2 with it the way it was.

Arjuna 11-05-2011 05:03 PM

awesome pics!

kellyguinn 11-05-2011 05:58 PM

Those are some nice looking deer Mottz!! Hope ya at least get a look at em in person. I might get one day out next weekend if everything pans out.

Mottz 11-05-2011 06:15 PM

Agree with ya kelly. I would be a little happier if I get to see one of them walking around instead of only seeing them on camera. But I still want to get my hands around those antlers!

fshafly2 11-06-2011 01:40 AM

Nice bucks Mottz - good luck especially with the decoy! I have yet to break out my decoys, having had both good and bad experiences with them...

-fsh

Mottz 11-06-2011 11:57 AM

Didn't see much of anything today. So couldn't tell if the decoy worked or not. So I moved it to another stand and tucked it away in an evergreen tree so that its there when I go hunt Wednesday. Have a good storm system coming in Monday night through Tues. And then back to more of a nice day for Wed. Hoping for the best.

RackLuster 11-07-2011 05:41 AM

i rifle hunted w/ my daughter all weekend. didn't see a thing! 2 of my friend’s kids shot their first deer on my property though. that was pretty cool. one of them was on the news w/ their first deer, she got a kick out of that.

i'll be bow hunting wisconsin one day this weekend and might be rifle hunting w/ my daughter again one day. we'll see. it's funny how fast the season winds down for me. i've only got a couple more days of bow hunting in me. might have to settle on that fork horn in Wisconsin that walks by me every time I hunt. Still have Wisconsin rifle season though.

i have a camera over a scrape and have gotten tons and tons of pictures of nice bucks - all in the middle of the night. the only one that visited during the day is the 7 point my friend's daughter shot on saturday. ugh. All the racks are beaten up too. all these bucks are spending their nights beating up on each other. It’s killing me!

fshafly2 11-07-2011 06:14 PM

I've spent a lot of time in the saddle this past week, with occasional does and dinks around. This afternoon, I watched a shooter buck (11 pt?) scrape and rub out of range. I grunted to no effect, and then tried a snort-wheeze, again no joy. All you can do is try. I found a nice tree that overlooks the trail that he and later, two other bucks, took into a marsh; I'll be there tomorrow afternoon...

Good luck all.

-fsh

Mottz 11-07-2011 06:44 PM

Sounds promising fsh! Best of luck to ya!

Rack, sorry to hear you and your daughter didn't see anything but it still must of been awesome seeing 2 others get their 1st bucks.

Brent B 11-08-2011 03:57 PM

Looks like the bucks are moving pretty good. I saw 6 or 8 different bucks over the weekend. Only one shooter on friday morning... a nice ten pointer but he just didnt give me a clean shot. I almost got ran over by a small 8 point. When walking to my stand sunday night I jumped a group of 4 small bucks. They all took off in different directions and a little 8 pointer ran 5 feet in front of me while I was kneeling on the ground lol. Pretty cool experience... as for this week I am stuck in ohio until saturday at least. Cold front is moving in tomorrow night should set up for a great weekend. Got another good one on camera.

Brent B 11-09-2011 06:52 AM

Guy got a pic of this buck in the woods at the farm on sunday... bout a mile and a half from my thicket. Also saw a nice 8 point out cruisin in the rain around 10 o'clock when driving home from work.

Mottz 11-09-2011 07:43 PM

My full day hunt was a bust. Had a couple small guys come close but even though I wanted to shoot, I just couldn't do it. Wind was terrible though so thats why movement was slim to none I guess? Rifle starts this weekend so if I get 1 opening day then I'll get right back out there with the bow. Still have til Dec 31st.

fshafly2 11-10-2011 04:45 PM

Nice buck pics Brent!

Mottz - restraint carries its rewards.
-----

I had a doe pass by, looking at her back trail on Sat morning, but only a spike showed up - boy my heart was pounding, lol. Then my partner, hunting about 400 yds away, called me at 0730 and said he hit a buck. I came down to join up and we looked at the blood trail - no need for Ruby, a firehose blood trail. If he sends me a pic, I will post it - a nice 17" 8 ptr, likely a 3 1/2.

Took my kids out for the opener of youth gun season. Gabe, my oldest is 10 and shot an 8 pt last year. This year he took a doe. Emma, my 8 yr old, shot and missed a doe today.

Mottz 11-13-2011 01:56 PM

Great job to Gabe!!

I know this is for our bow team but Nebraskas rifle seaon opened yesterday and I thought I'd tell everyone to be careful out there. I thought I was going to get shot by some roadpoachers. There were alot of vehicles driving the roads so I decided to move my spot. As I'm walking the treeline I see a doe running right at me and there just happened to be a vehicle parked on the road right behind it. I just hit the dirt mere milli-seconds before I heard 2 shots and bullets flying above. Scared the *&*#@$ out of me. After the deer was out of sight I stood up and they must of seen my bright orange and took off. Couldn't get any plates or else I would've called it in. I did find the doe they shot and I used my bonus doe tag and claimed the deer. So it didn't just get left there.

Arjuna 11-13-2011 03:43 PM

Wow...Mottz....that was close! That is ridiculous!

kellyguinn 11-13-2011 05:55 PM

That was a close one Mottz!!!! I hate to see the road hunters and turn them in when I can. It sucks you couldn't get the plates! I wish they would up the penalty for the poachers. It seems to me like loss of the hunting license is just no good since they are poaching any way. Maybe up the fines or start including jail time. Just my 2 cents.

Our rifle season starts this Saturday. I plan on taking the wife out for 5 days or so but I will have the bow with me as well. Not lookin forward to all the other hunters out there though!

fshafly2 11-14-2011 03:35 PM

Congrats to Gabe, Arj!

Mottz, ditto, that just sucks. I've heard several after-sunset shots around here - the "unofficial" gun season has opened for the dirt bags...

This buck showed up in one of my hunting spots yesterday - I was elsewhere, lol...

fshafly2 11-15-2011 02:49 PM

Well I sat up in a field this afternoon with a buck decoy, near where that photo of the 10ptr was taken in my last post. He came out just after sunset, but ignored the decoy and my grunts. He followed the trail some does took earlier - oh well...

Here is the photo I took of my partner and his buck from last weekend:
