Rackluster- That doesn’t sound like any fun at all. Hang in there.

We’ve laying off our main property hear in Michigan. It hasn’t been too hard with this heat. We’ll be heading back to Ohio in about a week. I can’t wait to get back down there!

kellyguinn 10-13-2011 02:16 PM

Crossbows are allowed! Good thing too. I take both with me incase my shoulder and hand start to act up in the colder weather.

LOL, good luck with the shoulder too...

My nephew put a 2 1/2 yr 8 ptr in my cooler a few days ago - his largest buck ever and he was very happy about it.

Good luck all, keep plugging away... someone's got to break the ice!

Been hot, and deer are in their transition period...haven't done much hunting since end of September. Things should be getting better here soon with some cooler weather on the way and where we are in the lunar phase.

Arjuna 10-13-2011 08:23 PM

headed to the camp tomorrow... season opens Saturday. I get to hunt that morning, but then I have a wedding that evening. I will then get to hunt Mon and Tuesday in a different county. Won't be online much this week...will post when something happens...IF something happens!

Brent B 10-14-2011 05:32 PM

Shot a doe this evening. Looked like a good shot maybe a little high. Had good bright read blood with some bubbles. I tracked her maybe 70 yards and backed out I think I saw a set of eyes. So i'm gonna go back out in the morning and hopefully she's right there.

fshafly2 10-14-2011 05:35 PM

Good luck with the doe Brent. If you were a bit closer, I'd bring Ruby out...

Brent B 10-15-2011 09:50 AM

Found my doe this morning in about ten minutes. She went about 20 yards further than where I stopped looking last night. I will get some pictures on tonight its been a hectic day.

Mottz 10-15-2011 12:21 PM

Went out checking cams with my son this morning. On the way home I clipped a doe with my truck. Did minor damage but she was hobbling off pretty badly. Didn't have my bow with me or I would have put her down. I feel bad that it happened, but I guess thats what happens sometimes. After looking at some pics, most of them were in the evening and with the wind the way it is compared to what its going to be tomorrow, I think I'm going to head out tonight here in about an hour. Hope I see something!

kellyguinn 10-15-2011 03:30 PM

Congrats on the doe Brent.

Good luck Mottz.

Muzzle loader season starts here next Saturday so I will be out with the ol smoke pole but the bow will be there just in case!!

Arjuna 10-15-2011 04:38 PM

Congrats, Brent. It takes a lot of patience and fortitude to wait it out like that. We r proud of you!

I drove home tonight so I could skin my deer and decided to check my trail cameras while I was here. Got a lot of small bucks on the cam and then this one showed up.

Well done Brent!

I blew an opportunity on an "EAB" doe when I threw in the towel early this evening and dropped my bow to the ground just before she showed up. A 4 ptr pushed her into a 20yd shooting lane, and there was no way for me to retrieve my bow :(. Oh well...

Lots of deer are showing up on the cams, here is a buck with several stickers (evident in another pic) from this morning, at least a 12'er...

Mottz 10-15-2011 06:30 PM

Nice work Brent! Didn't see anything tonight until I was walking out. Then I caught some glimpses of tails running away.

Heres the guy I'm after. Hopefully get to see him in the light!!

RackLuster 10-15-2011 07:33 PM

dang nice bucks guys.

i plugged another doe tonight. drilled her, watched her fall in sight. love when that happens. i didn't have high hopes for the hunt because a 6 pointer walked up on me while checking a trail camera. he must have snorted 30 times.

RackLuster 10-17-2011 05:56 AM

Wow, what a night! I blew a golden opportunity at the biggest buck I’ve ever had in bow range. Beautiful 10 point came out about 10 mins before end of legal shooting. He was 10 yards directly behind me when I saw him and he was heading right to me. I had already dropped my bow holder to the ground, I was going to get down early since I had a really long drive home and was super tired. The buck ended up directly under my tree smelling the bow holder and working a licking branch DIRECTLY under my stand. Finally he started walking down the trail. When I drew the top part of my new lonewolf climber (which is going back to cabelas tonight) fell about 2 inches and made a huge noise. I managed to stop the buck at 30 yards. I shot (very doable show, slightly quartering away!) but somehow only got a tiny amount of fat and fur on one blade. Judging by the lighted knock I thought I drilled him. He almost fell over right after the shot. Here I texted my wife and told her I drilled the biggest buck of my life. Not so! Apparently, he tripped on some grass????? I’m just disgusted!!!

I’m very encouraged about that spot though. There were 40 mpg gusts last night. on the way in to the woods i walked within 20 yards of a basket 7 point that happened to be standing under the tree i was going to setup in. could have shot him easily (took video too). Also passed on a fork and a doe before the big one came out. anyway, as disgusted as I am, I’m excited to spend sat-mon out there this coming weekend.

Hope you all had better luck than me this weekend.

Mottz 10-17-2011 02:21 PM

Ohh man rack, that sucks!!! But the experience must have still been awesome. Keep at him, he'll show back up!

fshafly2 10-17-2011 05:33 PM

Too bad Rack, good luck to you.

I finally got a doe tonight in the EAB area of the Navy Base - there are a few nice bucks that I'll be looking for now. Lousy pic, I had accidently zoomed in with the remote while trying to see if it was working, oh well...

Mottz 10-17-2011 07:05 PM

Nice job fsh!!

RackLuster 10-18-2011 05:44 PM

I am so ready to get back to wisconsin. the stand i'll be hunting is the best setup i've ever hunted. i've only hunted it about 7-8 times (just found it mid oct last year) but i've shot an 8 pt archery and a 9 pt w/ rifle, passed on another 8pt (my buddy shot him later that day), had another 8-10 pt that i couldn't get a shot at pass by and passed on 5-6 other smaller bucks and then of course blew my chance at the biggest of them all on Sunday night. the kicker is that it's public land. sssshhhh!!!

super excited to get back to that tree!! we've moved our trip up, leaving friday afternoon. so, i'll be hunting friday night - sunday. hopefully my buddy or me will knock something down this weekend.

good luck guys!

by the way, congrats on the does brent and fshafly.

Centauri 10-18-2011 07:02 PM

Had a fork literally within an inch of his life on Sunday. He stepped behind a tree and took 1 step out, thought he was clear and ended up putting the arrow in that tree. 1 more inch to the right and he would be on the ground. Planning on going tomorrow.

Arjuna 10-18-2011 07:37 PM

Rack, sorry about your buck... I know how it feels...

congrats on the does everybody. I shot one this morning, as well. Now its time to get some bone!

Brent B 10-19-2011 01:04 PM

Well been raining here or the past two days now and there's a 70 percent chance tomorrow. Hopefully some bucks will be out freshening up some scrapes this weekend. Next weekend should be pretty good I'm headed home on the 28th. If it stays dry I think they'll be shellin corn by the end of next week!!!

Robow45 10-21-2011 04:01 AM

Nice job on the does guys!

I'm heading to Ohio in a couple hours!! Lets see if I can get it done!!

RackLuster 10-21-2011 04:53 AM

good luck robow! i'll be in wisconsin for the afternoon hunt. i'll be hunting hard until monday afternoon.

fshafly2 10-21-2011 05:45 PM

I had a buck with v. nice character in chip-shot range tonight but gave him a pass. He had double beams, but the extra right beam was broken off at the base. I'll be thinking of him the rest of the season - hopefully the deer gods will remember me in their graces...

Mottz 10-23-2011 09:42 AM

I hope my luck changes soon because not seeing a thing is starting to drive me nuts!

Brent B 10-23-2011 04:44 PM

I'm rite there with ya lol. I'm headed home this weekend... dads been seein all kinds of deer at home. Hopefully the rain holds off this week and they'll get some of this corn shelled.

RackLuster 10-24-2011 01:55 PM

Back from 3 days in Wisconsin. Passed on 3 1.5 year olds and saw lots of does (killed 2) but didn't see a buck worth shooting. My buddy had a very nice 8 at 5 yards but couldn't get a clean shot.

I'm up to 4 does now. Probably done shooting them :) I have the annual camp Ripley hunt this coming weekend. Some real bruisers in there. Hopefully i'll cross paths with one.

Mottz 10-24-2011 04:49 PM

Hope you can get us started rack. We could use some points up there.

Robow45 10-26-2011 05:03 AM

Hey guys I hunted pretty hard last weekend in Ohio. I had an encounter with an old buck, not sure if I’d call it a good encounter but it was close. More info to come…….

Mottz 10-26-2011 04:02 PM

More info to come???? C'mon Robow, thats a terrible way to tease us:s2: DETAILS!!

Arjuna 10-26-2011 06:41 PM

I agree, Mottz....If he can't give us the story, it may be that the ending is still undetermined....I think he must be looking for one....

fshafly2 10-27-2011 02:13 AM

RL - good luck at Camp Ripley! I've read about the nice bucks from there.

Robow - details? Not good if we haven't heard by now guys.

Mature bucks are moving more, a friend got a very nice one last Saturday that was harassing does and another buck, 154" 9 ptr. Sorry, no pic.

Robow45 10-27-2011 08:13 AM

If you guys can wait until Monday you can watch it. :poke:

RackLuster 10-27-2011 07:28 PM

i like the sound of that robow. we need a preview though!

fshafly - there are some bruisers there. every year most hunters have at least one run in with a nice buck. i got one decent 8 point out of there a few years back. it's pretty crazy though 2500 hunters over 50,000 acres (not all accessible though). largest organized deer hunt in the country!

my next 9 days are going to be crazy!!!! 2 days at ripley, halloween w/ the familty, then 3 days in wisconsin, then 1 day w/ the family, then 2 days rifle hunting w/ my daughter.

Mottz 10-27-2011 07:52 PM

Wait until Monday? Is it going to be a Trick or a Treat?

Rack, man I wish I could get out as much as you do!!

It was an Awsome hunt but.........I guess you can let me know Monday :s13:

kellyguinn 10-29-2011 06:31 AM

Got out all last week. Very hot weather (90's) until Thursday. The rain came in and the deer started movin. I saw 24 deer within 40 yards and 9 differant bucks but I just didn't see a shooter. I'll give it another go in a few weeks. By then the rut ought to be heating up.

Robow is it Monday yet!!!
