Brad,

Too bad he wouldn't cooperate. Hopefully, you will see him again real soon.

I got the stand together and it looks pretty good. The only thing I will have to see is how noisy the mesg is until it's "worn in". I stood on it in the livingroom and it made some creaks and pops the first time. However, the second time I stood on it it was quiet.

Brad did you call or rattle or did he just come by? Were you close to an oak tree or what was your setup?

Mathewsboy 10-10-2007 07:29 AM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

I hunt in oaks, and also bait with corn.. He just showed up, two fawns were eating corn , but he just sensed something wasnt right, he was standing right down wind of me.. But didnt spook..Scent lok? Who knowss...

Well definately a productive hunt because now you know he is there. Good luck man.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

well I took a Half day off of work to hang another stand up there. I have a BIG white pine i'm hanging one in.. Maybe 70yrds or so from where I saw him last night. I think I might beable to cut him off on his travels.. Its a Rainy, windy day, just like I like to hang stands.. Keeps scent and noise down... So... I'm off.. Let you know how it went later on.. I'm all pumped up now.. I Like the weather..

Good luck Brad! There is nothing like laying your eyes on a nice one while your on stand! 15 yards away with no shot opportunity must of had you going crazy! I am sure you will be super cautious in that location. I hope you get him!

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Well got a Phone call from the LANDOWNER.. His NEPHEW wants to hunt there now too.. MAN!! I told him I have three stands, and my dad also hunts up there, but its His decision on what he tells his nephew.. He's always said NO to everyone else, but now its family.. Thats gonna throw a wrench into things if his Nephew comes up there.. DAMN IT!

davepjr71 10-10-2007 01:43 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

That sucks but is always the downside of hunting property owned by someone else. Are you leasing the land from him or he just lets you hunt there?

Mathewsboy 10-10-2007 01:48 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

He just lets me hunt there.. So... you know what that means... I can still hunt there, but its gonna just screw me up with another guys running around, or should I say KID..

fun2hunt 10-10-2007 02:15 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Maybe he'll be loud and scare one to you. You never know. Just make sure your in the stand before he is. Sorry Brad I know how that feels, I lost about 100 acres I really liked 2 years ago. I could do what I want and take family or friends. The morning I lost the land and had to go to another spot is the morning I shot my first buck with a bow.You never know how these things will turn out.Hang in there and it will pay off.

Yeah.. I'm just bummed right now,, I've been up there 15 yrs with NO ISSUES.. now this... But I always told my self, Its just a matter of time.. You need to OWN your own property for a NO ISSUE place to hunt...But man, who can afford that these days.. I'm no Millionare, thats for sure.. Not with Two kids and a Mortgage and Home Equity Loan.. LOL

I'm going sit in the stand I hung today, and Maybe just maybe, that Buck will come by and I'll get lucky.. Or should I sit where I sat last night.. Man.. DECISIONs DECISIONs

What would You do?

15 minutes before Dark? lol

fun2hunt 10-10-2007 02:30 PM

I would back to the same spot and make sure I was there at the same time he came thru before.

Whatever it takes

fun2hunt 10-10-2007 02:35 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

But I'm still a rookie at this so maybe some others on our team would have better advice. I just know that if I knew only one spot where there was a big buck for sure, that's where I would want to be.

Sucks to hear about your situation with the propertybrad. i Had the same thing happen to me last year, i ended just leaving and finding different land to hunt, was a good spot too[:@]

If i was you i would probally sit the new stand you hung..but then again if he didnt know you were there or didnt spook bad, it might pay to just hunt last nights stand. decesions is right flip a coin i guess. lol

im heading out in a few minutes myself....one of my stands isin a funnel betweeen a bedding area and apple tree's thats were im heading this evening.

good luck to ya!!

Mathewsboy 10-10-2007 02:39 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

well Its a 60+ acre parcel.. I also don't want to over pressure him... But the two stands I have are right on the Border and I dont have to walk through and spook him.. Thats one GOOD thing.. My stands are on the south edge, he comes from the North and West and East.. I have no problem getting in and out.. No spooking going on.. So thats GOOD.. I know thats a KEY component.. Now if that KID comes up, He'll be walking through the parcel most likely.. He'll have to!!

Hi Mike and Dave, I seeyou are on here. What are you guys up to?

davepjr71 10-10-2007 03:21 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

I just got home from work and there was 18 new posts!!

Mark,
If the new stand is in a better postion I'd hunt out of that one. If you didn't spook the buck he might be back through. It's always a flip of the coin.

I used to have issues on private land all the time. Guys would walk along a road bordering my uncle's property and drop down into the woods if they saw deer. One moron actually ran down through the woods right past my stand and when I hollered at him he ran even faster. I climbed down and asked his buddy what the heck his friend was doing. He told me he saw a deer and we went through the whole posted property and tresspassing thing.

This is the last day of warm weather here. If it's cool tomorrow I'm leaving work early and hunting tomorrow night. Friday morning I'll be in the spot I hunted in the evening 2 weeks ago. There are acorns everywhere. Therefore, I'm going with the place where the cow paths are with the scrape and rub. It's time to pull the lure out and a drag rope with the cold front coming in and see what happens.

OK, I really need to learn how to score a buck. The last buck posted scored 93. If that's a 93. What would you score this?

16" The G1's are small.
I have a question for you guys. Are you supposed to measure halfway between the last point ant tip for the H4?

MB...I hear ya. That is why I bought land about 9yrs ago....tired of "losing" my hunting spots and catering to the owners. I don't have a ton, but at least I can walk outside on my41ac and hunt when EVER I want. Now if I could just find the time! [8D]I do lease 1000 also, in WV....and even though its my best friends uncle and we have a hunt club there for 20yrs...you never know when it may go away. If I don't own it....I have no control.

Also, MB.....my financial services/mortgage business is geared towards mortgage planning & acceleration, and personal wealth building. If you want to learn how to possibly put yourself in position to buy some land one day, please email me--I may have something that can help you out. [email protected]

Oh yeah...I just ordered a new toy, the Millenium hang on, and 8 brackets. (and I am ordering 6 sets of climbing sticks also) This is the most comfortable hang on stand I've ever sat in....and I've been contemplating it a while. They have a great system....you hang the brackets where you want, and you only need one stand. My issue with hang ons has always been they wear you out once you've been in them for 3-4 hours. With this setup, I will be able to set out as many "set's" as I have sticks and brackets. No one can hunt from my stands while I'm gone, and I am totally mobile very easily. The main reason is when I head to IL I need to have a bunch of spots to hunt from and I will be hunting dawn to dark on most days. No way could I do that from my other stands. I think its gonna work out great...excited about it.

Last thing....I saw a nice basket 8 last night in my front clover plot. Perfect rack, if he can just make it he'll be nice next year for sure. Probably 80" or so...pretty buck. Got me siked!

Good luck guys....I'm feeling like one of you is gonna get us on the board soon!

-Mike

I can help you. It's really not hard.Your deer looks to be around 95" - 105" approx....but its really hard to tell from a picture. Can't see the tine length, or beam length well. I agree the 93" deer looks alot smaller, and no way that deer has a 4"+ base...but whos to argue. Again, hard to tell from the pics. Email me if you want help scoring your deer. It only takes a few minutes. And YES the H4 is halfway between...as you said. That is where alot of people mess up....they don't measure for the H4 if they only have 8pts or no G4, etc.

I rescored at 100 7/8. I'd like to get one like that this year.

Nathan,
You are going to have a great weekend for your opener. Hopefully, you get a little sleep so you don't burn out in the tree stand.

Mike,

I hope you get that buck.

We need to get on the board.Everyone will be hunting in our group after this weekend? I know I'm kicking it into high gear. I've had too much going on at work to sneak out and soon will have a break from the insanity.

Any of you guys ever use the climbing sticks from Sportsmans guide? I need at least 6 sets of them....these seem to be the best I can find price wise at less than $40 ea...for a 20ft stick.
Gimme some feedback if you have. I honestly can't see how they could be bad....they may not be ultra light, etc....but they also don't cost $100 and I could care less how much they weigh really. I'm not planning on carrying them in and out, just setting up for the season.

let me know if you have any opinions, thanks

-Mike

Well I ended up leaving my Stand at 5:30.. Wind was swirling and I ended up spooking a spike and two fawns were leary.. So I do what I should have did 3 years ago when I was Hunting a BIG 8.. I LEFT.. Back then, I took a chance, and of course the wind switch to the opposite and I stayed and the buck started to come in out of the swamp and got within 50 , smelled me and turned and left..

Better safe than sorry.. I can hunt almost any day I want.. So I'm in no real hurry, just as long as the NEPHEW dont screw me up, If he hunts up there.

Just got home a little while ago from hunting and seen 9 doe....4 of them came right under my tree. They were on the move this evening, also found a fresh scrape on the way to the stand. Sure was windy.

wv....i never used them either...but i picked up some last fall from wally world, going to give them a try this season when i hang one more stand. they seem pretty nice.

Thats your best bet mathewsboy, ya dont wanna spook him. years ago i didnt care much if the wind switched either i would just hunt. But now days im more cautious.

Hey mathews, your not talking about anyone's momma are you? Go get a big one this year. If you can make some time, I always have room for you in one of my honey holes. The bad news isyou can only shoot a 130 or better.
