Gary:
(Before I forget.....thanks, duke....I know that buck's still out there, though. I have learned some VALUABLE lessons through all of this)
I got onto stand about 4:00 yesterday afternoon (same stand I've been in, each time....in my honey hole). I had just sat down when I saw a doe slip into the thicket that leads to the bedding area. I don't think she ever heard or saw me. Didn't see another deer (GOSH WAS IT HOT) until 6:00 or so. I had 1 big doe and 2 smaller ones come right through the gate (I've opened up a section of the pasture fence to create this funnel). I thought, at first, about arrowing one of them.....but it felt so good being out there.....and it was early. I thought I still might see a buck. I know......greed.
They fed in the field for a while.....and then they left. I then had 2 fawns (still brownish in color....the does were really grey) come in (again - through the 'gate')....and feed. One of the fawns walked to the path I'd come in on and followed my tracks to my tree. It looked up at me....but never fiigured me out. it went back to feeding and went over to the other one. They left the field andI saw aBIG doeover at the mineral lick I'd put in earlier this year (out of bow range). Shestayed there and 4 more doescame in the field from the lower end (anything I can't see antlers/buttons on is considered a doe for story purposes....lol). They all fed until after shooting light.....and I waited them out. I finally had to resort to throwing something to get the big doe to leave. Yep....I tossed my quiver....and got it stuck in a lower branch....lol. I got it pretty easily when I got down.
I saw 11 deer......no bucks......and 9 were in bow range. A GREAT night on stand....even if I never drew it back. My preseason work has paid off. I've had a VERY exciting year.....and my season is 11 days old.
I've seen 26 deer in 4 sittings.....and 19 have been in bow range of Mitch or myself. We have been blessed.
Hopefully we'll put us one on the board, soon.
Jeff

I hate to say "brown is down"......but the tracts I'll be hunting Friday evening and Saturday morning are ones in which I know little about. This is our first year hunting them. I've got trail cam photos of a scrappy looking 7-pointer.....but nothing else to speak of, buck-wise.
If you're a deer that's not sportin' antlers, though.......this ain't your weekend to come trottin'by me.....expecting me to be "picky". I won't be.
I'm a team player, though, guys. Even if I wasn't on this team.....I've already said my first buck with the bow is going to be something I'm proud enough to mount. I won't shoot the spikes/forks. That's just me.
Good luck to you all.
Jeff

rob hows that cold fall air treating you?? i dont know about where you are but i could see my breath ALL day today. im actually considering shutting off the fan tonight. i hate to do it though..i know itll get stuffy in this little dorm room. but man did it feel like FALL today. cant wait. headed home tomarrow after class. last weekend before the season. the gear will be lined up and packed. ready to roll. double check it next week and its GAME TIME! friday i plan to take my stand out to my buddys and learn to use it better and shoot from it a bit. then i gota meet with my farmer friend and hes coming with me to pick the opening morning tree. im not too excited about opening morning though. theyve seen 9 diffrent bucks in the fields PLUS does...but so has everyone else in the township. someone actually been driving through the field im hunting. my friend spread manure on their trail..they made a new one. spread again..they made another. i havent got to talk to him to see if they been back. im not actually hunting the field. im hunting the woods that they enter back into. i really dont have any hopes for the morning. too many guys know about them. the whole township talks of them....im in a spot noone else should be but still...we will see. after the first day we have backup plans to hunt between the houses where the deer will be after the pressure is on. opening evening i will be tucked on the edge of that sweet fruit orchard. i have HIGH hopes for that spot and been having dreams of my slamming does and nailing a bruiser there.....we will see.
on a GOOD note for the team....i doubt my doe tags will be here for opening day for my home area...i may be BUCK hunting. i got my 2 for up here at school but just sent for the 2 at home friday..we will see. im trying to get a doe or 4 under the belt in quick fasion. my release arm is itchy! the first evening in the orchard though i may buckhunt either way. the does arent going anywhere....and the first day may be the best to bust a buck in there. we will see....id love to set my hands around a set of antlers with the bow in the other hand!

Friday AM plan.....
3 does usually cross the road just down from my house. I'm gonna slip through the woods and hide behind the wood pile....just outside the pasture fence where they walk by. With any luck (they sometimes travel through before daylight).....i'll get a shot. With any REAL luck.....they might have a feller with 'em.
Anyways....I'll be in the woods....with a bow in my hand.
