Went out this morning and had a great hunt. Rainy dreery day... Didn't get light till close to 7am. I was kindof in a fog and looked over and saw a tail flicker in the dark. It was just getting light enough to make them out... A doe w/ 3 fawns. She worked her way under me to about 10 yards... broadside... I drew, but couldn't see my pin yet, so I let down... they milled around a bit and were gone as soon as I could comfortably shoot.
Nice to see them though. Nice big fat doe~ |

Hey guys. I finally got out yesterday!!! My kids have been sick, and long story short I have been stuck at home. ( Being a grown-up sucks some times!)
Well about 8 seconds after shooting light out comes a fawn and a doe. Needing meat for the freezer and having limited opportunities this year I was not going to pass her up if she gave me a shot. Well she walked 8 yards from me and stopped broad side. Let it fly and watched her run out of sight. I thought I herd her crash so I did not wait to long to get out of the tree. I went over to check my arrow and good blood and a blood trail a foot wide. Now comes the cool part. I have promised my 6 year old son I would come get him If I get a deer, and looking at my watch it was 7:15am I had time to get him before he got on the bus. We got back about 8:45 and he wanted to track her so I said OK show me what you got. Now I never tracked her before I left so I had no idea how far she went exactly but did not think it was to far. Well it took about an hour or soto go 70 yards But Dam if he did not track her. I Was so proud!!!!! This is one deer I will never forget. Here is a pic. ![]() |

Congrats Medic...and good job on including your boy. like Western said, he will never forget his first tracking job with dad.
Well, I am back from my elk hunt. It was and exciting year, with all sorts of little adventures. We brought back 4 elk and 3 sets of antlers. We had 2 bull tags and 2 cow tags and filled out on the second day, fairily close to camp also. Started out with snow in the mountains and more people there than I have ever seen before. We were headed up to camp on the 4 wheelers and there were other stuck on the trail because of the snow. They didn't have chains so we went right around them and they never did get up to where we were and they wanted to be. anyway, saw elk everyday and during some before season scouting got a little closer to the elk than I wanted to, but didn't get busted so all was well. Had snow everyday and on the way home we had to drive thought a snow storm where half the time you couldn't see the road. Semi's pulled over or stopped in the middle of the road all over as well as a few cars and truck. We didn't cover ground very fast for those 2 or 3 hours. So, when walking back the first night of hunting, I hear some bulls bugling down in gultch and my dad said he heard them as well as some cows down there too. The next morning, I go to a high point and hear a bugle way down at the bottom. I let a bugle rip and this guy snaps right back and starts moving up. So me and my uncle decide to go down and side hill it to a field we think they are moving toward and my dad and friend stay on top and get to where we think they will run. Did I tell you that we got around 8 inches of snow overnight (my tent caved in on me and was touching my forehead). With the snow, the sidehilling was slowgoing. Well, we found some elk in the field already, but manage to sneak withing range of them. My uncle has a shot right away, but I didn't because of a tree. So we wait because they are feeding up hill. Once I have a shot, we both shoot and get two bulls. The heard starts running right at us and I honestly thought we were going to get stampeded. When they are about 35-40 yards from us, my uncle shoots into the air and they change direction missing us by less than 20 yards and head up hill. About 15 seconds later, more shooting starts. Well, that is my dad and friend. So, the rest of that day was spent skinning and quartering and boning and hauling out the meat. We finished packing the meat out the next day. After we shot them, it got foggy and stayed cool, we couldn't have asked for better weather. So here are some pictures. ![]() |

This is my uncle with his 7x6, me with my 6x5 and my friend with the 6x6 he found when we where packing out the meat. We don't exactly know why it was left, we figured it was either a bow hunter or muzzleloader (probably bow) that shot it and either couldn't find it or just boned out he meat and left the antlers.
