the little .22 hornet
i no nothing about guns, and hunting. I jsut started this year, and that is why i post here...so i comr to you with another question. Is the .22 Hornet a suitable yote gun and a small game gun....i will do heaed shots on the squirrels and rabbits, but would it still blow the bagizzes out of them, or would a .22 mag be better. Thanks a bunch

I love the hornet. Little more umph than a 22mag, but not as fast as a 223. Great gun for 100 yard shots. Little overkill for squirrel, and might travel some distance while shooting into the air. I would stick with the 22LR for squirrel. Makes a heck of a fall turkey gun.

The Hornet is a fun little popper. But I will stray from the rest of these guys. I'm going to assume you don't handload, and around here, .22 Hornet shell cost about a buck a shot. Fifty bucks for fifty rounds. The .22 mag is about ten bucks for fifty rounds. With the right bullet, namely the 50 grain hollow point from Federal, or 33 grain V-max from Remington can and will kill a coyote at 100 yards. Been there, done that. The .22 mag will also be a little more pleasant on squirrels and rabbits. Plus you can buy a piss load of shells and give a prairie dog town hell, all the while having a big old smile on your face!

The 22 Hornet is a great little round would be good for coyotes out to about 125 yds and head shots for small game. But I agree with pharaoh2 the round are expensive even thru the mail order cataloges and even handload them is not for begineers. The 22 Hornet also is known for being very finicky, the gun I had would put one load into about an inch anything else 2 1/2 to 3 inch or larger.

I have allways liked the 22 Hornet.
Good little gun to keep around for yotes and groundhog. I have killed a few deer with it, but has been some time ago.
Mine is an old Savage and still shootes nice and straight. My son will end up useing it for his first Yodle Dog gun. He is still shooting my old 22 LR at the moment though.
We are learning the RESPECT and RULES values still. Being that he has just turned 9. But he is getting there.
Let us know what you end up doing.
