lol...I figured this would be a good convo.... Heres my two cents worth... I do feel the land was wrongly taken and the native population "bastardized" BUT...my family wasn't even here during that time period! So...I'm supposed to feel like I own the Native Americans just because I'm white? If you go back far enough every land has been taken over...I'm not sure at what point the past violence should be a non-factor.
Also, about applying for seperate citizenship...I'm not sure how you can qualify for benefits (however useless the benefits may be) unless you apply to be a member of the soverignty. And if you don't pay certain taxes then you should not be getting benefits like SSI...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Indians have every right to freely become U.S. citizens (which many Latin Americans and others die for the chance to become) and live in a modern America. Isn't it a choice to remain the way they are?
imn my opinion, we owe more to the African americans, then we do to the Native americans. we put them through how much, before they finally got theire freedom. we not only took their land, but we also took them from their homeland, and brought them to a totally new country. i feel sorrier for them tahn i do for the native americans.

i also think that native americans should have to pay taxes and everything else like that if they want the benifits, like SSI, and all those other things.

if they really feel like they are being mistreated, then why dont they become U.S. citizens. wouldn't they have a better life then.

im not trying to say that the native americans dont deserve any respect or anything, im just saying i think they want people to feel sorry for them, way too much.

I highly dislike the idea of sovereign nations within the United States and I also highly dislike the idea of race-based rights bestowed on one group of people only. Not that they didn't suffer horribly and not that the goverment did not do them wrong but that time is passed. In my opinion the hard ships continue today because they are a sovereign nation on reservations. If there was a way to fully integrate without losing cultural heritage then I would go for that. I guess what I'm trying to say is I didn't kill anyone and I didn't steal anyones land and conversly very few Native Americans born in the last 100 yrs have suffered from direct actions by US citizens so I don't feel that they should get continued special treatment for any reason. Lifting one group of people above another in terms of fundamental rights is distinctly unAmerican and goes counter to the words of the Constitution. I know what many will say they will state that the Native Americans were here first and what not and while this is true we can't deny the truth that societies conquer and assimilate other societies and have for thousands of years and will likely continue to do so. In fact in the future when our society becomes sufficiently corrupt and weakend some other group will likely conquer us (if you've studied Roman history than you will see this seems highly likely). Whether we like it or not Native Americans will never be restored to their previous place on the landscape we can only hope that the cultural resources survive because the world could learn alot from NA cultural views of ecosystems and wildlife.

huntingirl: please don't automatically assume that an opinion you do not agree with is "from the right" as conservatives have numerous views and you can't really ascribe one view to an entire side of the political spectrum.

Indians shouldnt have anymore benefits than us. Big deal, they'd been here for thousands of years. Survival of the fittest is my take on that one..

80% of Indians live below the poverty line? I honestly think its their own faults. When we fished the Chippewa Flowage we had to drive through the reservation and i saw how they lived. They all were sitting on their porches drinking. there were burned out trailers here and there. junked cars, etc. They now own the most hallowed bait shop on the flowage, its where Louis Spray took his world record muskie and its where many potential WR's have been brought. Now that the Indians have it, its going downhill in a hurry. I'm not afraid to say: Indians have proven to be very lazy in this part of the country. We let them have their casinos and now they wont pay the state the money they were supposed to for us letting them have the casinos. tens of millions of dollars. All we do is throw money at them and let them do whatever they want in Wisconsin. May not be the same in your state, but thats the way it is here. They're lazy and expect us to provide everything for them because of their ancestors. Yeah, my ancestors were Vikings, so should i be able to pillage Europe whenever i please?

i see most of the peolpe defending indians are people who have never been on a reservation and seen what its like. nieve people..no, they dont deserve a scholarship for being a minority and their land was taken. scholarships should be awarded on merits, not race anyway. im part Irish. maybe i should get money because my Irish ancestors were constantly berated by the british?? blacks, indians, whites, nobody should get money for what happened in the past. its past, its happened. we can't change it.

let me put it in a way that you'd all understand...

Saddam Hussien and Osama BinLaden, we're fighting them for 'our' freedom, yes? for those of you who don't know, the answer is YES. Now, suppose that one or both came here and said "Hi, we conquered you, you are now ALL Iraqi, you must speak Iraqi, use Iraqi money, listen to our government, you are no longer americans so don't act like it" You'd get pretty upset wouldn't you? You don't want to listen to their government, its not yours.

In other words, we didn't ask to be americans, and we don't want to be.

Huntingirl, its been happening since the dawn of time. its called survival of the fittest. Indians just didn't happen to be the fittest and they didn't survive. You can't argue just becuase your indians you deserve everything. my ancestors pillaged the living daylights out of northern europe. those people fought back as best they could and that was that. eventually you gotta give up. indians need to get the chip off their shoulder and get off their lazy you know whats and stop complaining. i've seen what its like on reservations. because they're indians, they get to do whatever they want and they're lazy and Uncle Sam will take care of them. they could care less if they're a productive member of society. im not saying all are like thta, because there are many indians who can hold on to their traditions but can be American, not we hate you all because you took our land and raped our women.

no, he doesn't

but anyway... we don't want to be a productive member of you're society... i'm not saying "poor us, we've nothing to do, what a pity" all i was trying to do was convey WHY it is that we get free college tuition... for myself, i don't... i get a free ride though the fire company... should firefighters who risk their lives every day not get scholarships too?? you know thats soooooo horrible... we should just get off of our lazy you know whats and work shouldn't we? oh god don't get me started on paramedics... sheesh... we're such lazy people....god...

i'm not posting here anymore... you children are an insult to my race and my species
