The salt pit is the perfect way to give salt to the wildlife. You can monitor it by the dig outs. Also, put a trail cam up. You would be surprised at what else, uses these sites. Look at "Whitetail Wisdom" NAHC book. They have a good article on salt pit building and locating.

Most co-ops handle both plain and mineralized salt in both blocks and 50lb. bags. You may not see them as they are back in the warehouse. I prefer the bags. mixed in with the native soil or poured on stumps, it is not very easy for someone to pick up and carry out. I have an old salt lick that's over 50 yrs old. It gets refreshed early spring when things start to green. They use it pretty hard as things green up and then, as the grasses, etc. start hardening and getting drier they will taper off. We keep a block on a pallet for our 4 horses, and when deer come into it, they don't usually lick the block but work the ground around the pallet.
