Bare root white oaks
Dan O..... any tips, suggestions or recommendations for planting bare root white oaks? I was given about 25 2' -3' trees. How long do I have to plant them? I' ll definately plant them this weekend, but any tips on keeping them healthy until then?
Thanks,

RE: Bare root white oaks
The normal for must be planted is a maximum of 24 hr after you bring them out of cold storage. That' s if you keep the roots moist and the trees cool.
You' ve got 2 choices that I know of:
1) Pack the roots with moist sawdust, paper shavings etc. and put the trees in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge until the weekend
2) Dig a trench in the garden and heal the trees in until you dig them out for planting on the weekend. Moist sand is good for back filling.
Don' t let the roots dry or the trees will die. Even when you' re planting, keep them in the plastic bag (preferably in the shade) and only take out one or two at a time as you plant them. Short periods (5-10 minutes) in water to soak the roots are OK but don' t leave them in water until the weekend.
If you get stuck about planting them this weekend leave them healed in over the summer or get some 2 gallon pots and grow them individually until the leaves drop in the fall.
