we plan to plant in the spring, what is needed to do right now?
i took a soil sample to k-state the other day. they told me for a deer food plot i am ready to plant. the ph was 7.6. (not sure though, but i can update with the specifics) i think they said there was 0 phosporus, 0 potasium.... should i fertilize the spot before winter?
the spot has a thick grass growing on it with a massive root. what do you recomend that we should do about the grass? i have purchased a tiller, i think we will cut the grass, remove it, then till the spot, and finally rake away the root system. the plot size is amost exactly1 acre. or should we spray the grass then come back and till it?
thanks for any help,
vic

Spray it in the spring with Arrest by whitetail Institute about a month before you plant. Then a week befor you plat till it. Make sure after you till it, you smooth it out. Go over it with a yard roller. After you till it the ground will be fluffy and you need to compact it or the seed will go to deep into the ground.Put the seed down with firt. about 50-100 lbs of 12-12-12, then go over it with a yard roller one more time (only if you can take 2/3 to 3/4 of the water out of it) you dont want the yard roller to be to heavy or you could crush the seed to deep into the ground. If your seed gets put in the groung to deep nothing will grow. good luck and remember that your first year is the hardest.

thanks, (whatisup02). i will hold off all the work till the spring. should i not worry about the root system (just till it), it is very thick, they are almost like sappling roots. plus the grass is very thick and knee high, should i try to remove most of it before tilling? i am sure the arrest will kill off the grass but it will leave a lot of residue.

The Arrest will not hurt most of the seed/plants by whitetail institute. Go to there web page and read up on it. If it is that thick I would mow if down than rack it up, or it will clog your tiller up. Then I would till it this fall so the roots can start to decompose <-(Spell). Make a compost out of all that grass to put back on the food plot latter on. I would still spay it with the Arrest.
