Default check out my first food plot.

Well I cleared some trees and raked all of the junk out of the area I planted so it was down to dirt and then just spread a bunch of seed down and two weeks later this is what it looks like.

I did two little areas around my treestand, one of the areas is done with Quaker Boy seed, while the other is seed from the local seed store that had amixture of alice white clover, barkant turnips, dwarf essex rape seed, prana tetraploid ryegrass, crop seed, inert matter, and weed seed.

Here is the quaker boy seed, I put down way to much...

And here is the local seed store seed, I planted this about two weeks after the other one.

Do you think that this will be a big enough area to attract them in or no? The land it so thick where we hunt these were the only places I could really do it. Also, what kind of fert should I throw down on this and when?

Nice looking spot there taz, from the pics it looks like light could be an issue. The plot should have atleast 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. That mix will attract deer, over grazing could be an issue but you could always replant closer to the fall. Good luck and keep us posted.

Good luck with you plots. There are small enough that my only cncern would be that once the deer find them.... they won't last long and will be long gone before hunting season starts up. Let us know what the outcome is? Good luck and good huntin'

So shouldI have waited closer to fall to plant this stuff so they dont eat it all before the season?

What should I put on it for fert?

You could over seed it closer to the fall if over grazing becomes an issue, just broadcast more seed before a good rain without tilling. No need to fertilize on new soil but if you really wanted you could get a 55lb bag of 10-10-10 and divide it between the 2 plots in a month or so. Good luck.

The over-seeding is a great idea to consider.

I couldnt find any 10-10-10 fert so i got some Scotts Starter fert that is 20-27-5. Think this will work? Or keep searching for 10-10-10?

Taz,
Careful about putting down fertilizer where you already have a greened up food plot. Especially if the fertilizer has high levels of Nitrogen- as this will burn up your already "greened up" forage. I would look for the 10-10-10 and then wait until you KNOW it's going to rain (or raining) and then go in and put some down. This way, you know it will get worked into the soil in the plot immediately, rather than sitting on your plants and burning them up. If the "20" or "27"in the fertilizer you're thinking of using is Nitrogen- STAY AWAY from using it on any plot that already has greened up.

Just my .02 cents....... there are guys here with lots more experience than me- if I'm off base with this advice, please someone- tell me.

Rob
