Default Best Thing for the Worst Soil

I have a plot in the mountains of western Virginia elevation around 2300 ft. We have a short growing season and dry, acidic, shallow, rocky soil. What should we plant?

Do a PH Test!!! That is paramount!

I'd try some buckwheat to help build the soils for a few years during the summer while getting your pH right. Winter wheat and annual rye usually do well on most soils as well for fall hunting plots...but still perform better with proper pH levels...just takes a little planning and work.
