Man Im in the same boat. I have researched this so much I should gave a degree in it
First off, there are a million different types of apple trees. Some bear fruit after only 2 or 3 years some up to 10. You also have different types of root stock that determine how tall they will grow such as dwarf, semi-dwarf, and standard. Dwarf and semi-dwarf will bear earlier but they will only grow to 10-15 feet. A standard takes longer to bear fruit and will reach 20-25 feet but is slower growing. Also some types bear every year while some are every other. If you want have time to spray them for diseases there are a few that you can buy that have been "bred" that are disease resistant. Apples trees are not self pollinating so you will need at least 2 unless you get one that has been grafted with about 4 or 5 other types of apples. They are usually self pollinating. The winter banana apple tree is an excellent pollinizer. When do you want your apples to ripe? Depending on the type of apple tree some are ripe in june while others not until december. There is alot more to this than I thought and have been doing a lot of reading on it. Also you need to see what zone you are and see if that type can even grow in you area. Heres what I plan a planting, 2 of each. Liberty apple trees on semi dwarf root stock. They bear early and have heavy crops and are disease resistant. The also ripen at the start of bow season. Winter banana for pollinizer. Black Arkansas cause it dont ripen until december. Jonafree, about the same as liberty. Im also going to plant a few meader persimmon trees. Do you a little research and see what best fits your needs. Also, February and March are usually the best months to start planting. Might be later for you cause I dont know where your from. You dont want the ground froze but you dont want it to warm either cause the tree must still be in dormacy. Hope this helps.
