Default Food Plot Additive

I'll be planting here in about a month. Going to try a clover/chicory/alfafa blend on a .75 acre plot. Just noticed that I have almost a whole 50# bag of Plotspike oats left over from last season. Would there be any advantage/disadvantage to adding this to the mix? Would the oats provide cover until the other plants come up, or would it just compete?

The oats will germinate quickly and provide erosion control and browse until your plot seeding comes up, but you'll have to mow it before it goes to seed.Otherwise it could smother your food plot. It's an annual and won't come back. But if the seeds drop, it will re-seed itself. We usually recommend one bushel (32#)/ac.as a nurse crop planting rate. 50# on 3/4 ac. would be a bit much. Half the bag would be about right.

Thanks, Wingbone. I'll go with half the bag.

I wouldn't waste the Plotspike oats as a cover crop. You paid a premium price for those as a fall deer attractant. Why not buy some cheap rye to use instead and save the Plotspike for a late summer planting?
