Well, one reason for the white pines is because they grow quickly and my dad wanted to be able to see atleast alittle bit what its going to look like when hes long gone since the oaks grow slowly. Another reason is for a bedding area for the deer durring the winter. There is a pine thicket about half a mile from our propery and the deer seem to hang out in the pines more than anywhere else durring cold weather, especially when the snow hits. But this is our little experiment before we start planting the rest of the fields that we will mostly plant oaks in.

Think about using the tree pro tubes or some other protecter it makes a big difference, have you checked with NRCS or whatever agency handles your WHIP program they will sometimes help pay for these.I put in 700 trees and 1000 shrubs with more every year.

habitat- Are you talking about somthing that protects the trees from animals like deer? That has been a concern since I know that a buck or two will come along and let some frustration out on some of my trees. I was thinking about takeing some snow fence and putting it around them.

Roadkillwarrior; what you're doing will give you a lifetime of memories when you return to the woods that you planted. Chicken wire cages will help keep the deer, etc. out. Bucks usually only rub trees that are getting larger 2"+ in size and at least in my area they are deciduous (poplars, etc).

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to order apple trees from, or species recomendations?

I'm on my way. Today I ordered 250 Blue-X 48" tree shelters and a planting bar. Up next I will be ordering fertilizer tablets. I plan on planting some white oaks, a few apple and pear trees, and maybe some evergreens. I figure that if I don't use all of the tree shelters this year,I can always store them in the barn. I will be ordereing my trees from the NYS DEC nursery and the fertilizer tablets from Forestry Supply. I plan on using mulch from the local highway department around the base of the trees. Now cabin fever is starting to wear on me. I have drawn and redrawn my plans. Its time to execute.
