Thanks answerguy. Any idea what cedar is worth? The guy I bought it from didn't hunt. He owned it for about 10 yrs. He said he thought about logging it but that the cedar wasn't really worth that much.
As you can kind of seein the last pic, there is about 2 acres in the back that is higher ground. I had thought about clearing out a portion of thatand plantinga small food plot.
Call your DNR and see if they can give you the names of any loggers in your area. Advice I've been given is always get a few estimates before doing anything. As to the cedars value; I have no idea. But I have to believe it is far from worthless. If you got that 2 acre area cleared you could have quite a draw for deer. The problem you might have is having the deer eat it all up before the season starts.

Packm2765: How much of the year is the area flooded? That will determine the crops that you can plant in the area. I think you're going to be surprised when you find out how much the cedars are worth.

The only time there is standing water is during the wettest times of the year. The majority of the time the ground is soft but not flooded.

Most legumes don't handle flooding well and need good drainage. Check into growing requirements before you plant knowing that the area is wet. Unfortunately those are the backbone of most food plots. You may have to go with annuals that can handle the moisture and attract deer.

Something like Shot Plot might work pretty good. It's a brassica mix that deer usually don't go after until a couple of hard frosts.

I check with a couple loggers in the area and they tell me there is no market for cedar around there. I might try to clear out part of the higher ground and make an opening to plant something there. Looks like I got my work cut out for me. Thanks for the info.

Here's another idea:

In many areas cedar is preferred over pine for log homes. If you have good diameter logs a dealer might be interested.
