I recently came across a good deal on 38 acres of mostly cedar swamp. There is about 2.5 acres of high tillable ground in one cornerthat I might put a small cabin on. The area around it is mostly cedar swamp as well. What are some things I can do to help hold the deer on this property? Pictures and Aerial photos are availble.
Thanks

Cedar swamps are natural wintering/shelter areas. They provide protection from the wind and are warmer than open areas. Their density can also make them difficult to hunt.I would suggest planting the areas around the swamp and treating it as your sanctuary.

Is there anything growing on the ground or are the cedars too dense?

Exactly what I imagined. You have some nice cover for deer there. If you are determined to do something I might suggest getting a logger in there to create an acre or two opening. After you find out what mature cedar is worth you may decide to go larger.

Thanks answerguy. Any idea what cedar is worth? The guy I bought it from didn't hunt. He owned it for about 10 yrs. He said he thought about logging it but that the cedar wasn't really worth that much.
As you can kind of seein the last pic, there is about 2 acres in the back that is higher ground. I had thought about clearing out a portion of thatand plantinga small food plot.
