Default persimmons

I'm getting some persimmon trees to plant for deer. They are supposed to be 2-3 feet tall. Whats the best way to protect them from being eaten while young, wire cages maybe? And how long before these start bearing?

Default RE: persimmons

Someone makes a kind of hard plastic wrapping to protect the trees from rabbits. Our place has lots of wild persimmon trees. They seem to bear at about 5-7 years old.
