Default Feeders and Feed

I was looking into buying On Time's S-250 Quad PodFeeder with On Time Solar powered unit. I have two questions. Can I use 50% corn and 50% Oats with a spin type feeder like this? And Will the solar/gel 6volt setup stay charged thru the cold winters if the NE or should I expect to recharge that battery on a regualer basis ?

I want to use a mixture of corn and oats/pellets so the diet is not all starch but some complex carbs and protien. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe I'm wrong - but I think the DEC made it illegal to feed deer - in all cases - due to CWD being found in NY.

That said - I think you can get deer to eat oats eventually - but I don't think they prefer them - especially not over corn.

I like food plots over feeders - and I like free choice feeders over spin feeders in the programs I'm familiar with.

I agree with farm hunter about deer preferring corn over oats, but I agree with you that they need more than just starches. We use bunk feeders to feed protien pellets and feed mixes.I guess it depends onwhere you're at, butthe problem with these is keeping the cattle and horses out of them. If you build oneof these, you get into building afence around it,etc. Pain in the neck, but worth it to get better nutrients to the deer population. About the batterystaying charged,I ALWAYS carry an extra charged battery with me. Sometimes the solar chargers can't keep up if you'refeeding a lot of corn each day. So I carry a backup. Good luck!
