While checking out my land last weekend in western NYS, I noticed quite a few green acorns on the ground. Just a short stem attached to it. There was no sign of squirrels being the culprit. I know my fruit trees at home have been dropping apples, and I am thinking that it is drought stress related. It has been so dry here. Anybody noticed this or have any thoughts???

BlueJays. They go after the hazelnuts before they're ripe too.

they are not protected as far as I know.not on the list antway,we have always poped them in the fruit trees and pecans.same with the mocking bird,(state bird) but not protected.

All nongame birds are protected, except starlings, English sparrows and feral pigeons.

Protected Wildlife



Eagles, hawks, owls, swans, spruce grouse, wolves, lynx, moose, cougars, cub bears, and sows accompanied by cubs, and all white or albino deer may not be taken at any time. All nongame birds are protected, except starlings, English sparrows and feral pigeons.

Before you go out and start blasting away, try calling your state dept. of forestry and ask them about the oaks.
