Where in southern tier is your camp Jaydog? Mine is in the Wellsville area close to the PA border.

We have a couple of acron trees in our yard dropping young green acorns too. I suspect it is the birds too, but I didn't notice it last year and we have always had tons of blue jays and other birds around.

I've seen acorns on the ground over the last few weeks. Not tons, but noticable. It's been dry here too... most of the summer..
