Default Additions to the Cabin

This topic might get moved I suppose, because it doesn't have alot to do with QDM, but since I post here most often, I wanted the people I converse with regularly to see the progress we've made on our hunting cabin. We power it with a portable generator, and are 2 miles from the closest road.

This section is after the 1st addition in 2000 -originally it was a 12x12 ft - we had added on 12X20ft:

Since that time - we decided that we needed dedicated sleeping quarters, storage and a bathroom attached. We are currently finishing up a 12x12 ft bedroom that sleep 6, and an 8x8 bathroom/storage area. Here are some pictures taken over the last week:

Sorry to boast a little, but I'm very proud of what we've accomplished on a limited budget. All the doors and windows were "pick-ups" from freinds' remodling jobs. The floors and walls were panels from a defunct 18 hole miniture golf course that we had given to us. All of the floors and walls of the new addition are treated lumber and marine plywood, because that is what the golf course had been made of - in some of the pictures, you can see holes in the walls, that used to be "the cups" on the golf course. We purchased the rafters, plywood for the roof, roofing materials, insulation, and plastic to complete the addition - which totaled less than $600 - when split 4 ways - wasn't that bad. We still have to finsih the inside, but even if its just wrapped in plastic this year, it'll be nice to have the extra room. The "dish" seen in one of the last pictures, is our "extravagence" this year - I can't imagine how much we'll even use it, but the price was right.

Man, that's great! Looks like it's coming along well. I'll bet the sleeping quarters will help out a lot compared with the limited space before. Nice to see you got by with so little money.

I am building a cabin soon too, and wonder what suggestion you would have on a generator (type, size) to get. I guess the size will be in part determined by how deep the well is, but you might have some suggestions...

Very Nice FH! I know what you mean about costs. They can run up in a hurry. I agree...take what you can get. My favorite part is those AWESOME footers you have there Gotta love it! Keep us posted on the finished product.

Cool FH,

Its simply amazing what a little resourcefulness can do for a budget. You have a right to be proud, my cabin cost substantially more even with alot of my own sweat equity. You will like the dish unit as there are alot of hunting shows on satelite.

Hey DougMd, I noticed your question on the generator. That is how I power my cabin. I presently have a 3500 watt Honda generator, which does what Ineed including a 220V well pump. If I had done it over I would have gone with at least 5000 watt unit. I think it would have been easier on the generator if it were larger.

Farm Hunter; that's not a cabin; it's heaven in the woods. Nice looking place. The flower garden is a pleasant touch. I sure hope your dish is legal, like all of ours are in the great white north.

I've looked in wind solar power and I think I'll be installing a wind turbine when I move up north. In our area, even though it's in the bush, the building regulations are overwhelming. Minimum 1200 ft2, minimum 2x6 studs, minimum insulation and snow load capacity, etc, etc, etc. We Canadians know how to over-regulate.

Gotta love the tongue and groove!!! Thats what my camp is one in on the inside also. Now the dish is a little much beyond cabin material; plus where are the cards on the table and empty Beer cans??

Now all you need is a kick butt fireplace to make it a real cabin!!

2 miles back in off the road has Got to be kickin!!!! Wish my camp was that far off the road!! But I'll take the view off my front porch any day of the week !! (70 miles on a clear day)

Things are proceeding very quickly, I do not have pictures to post yet, but will soon. We got the addition done, and insulated/wrapped. Sitting around discussing it, we decided that knotty pine tounge and grove was not likely going to happen any time soon. We got discussing, how we could finish the inside, and kicked around rough cut hemlock, good wood paneling, etc. Then we priced it with sheetrock, and decided that even if we wanted to change it later, it would be the most economical way to go. So all week, we've been driving the 20-30 miles, after work, and hangin' rock. You cannot imagine, how much like a house it seems. We have the 12X20 section all in pine - (started that this two years ago), including the vaulted ceiling in the main room, and now 12x24 is rocked. We hope to get to the 8x8 bathroom and storage this year, but time and money is running short.

I'll post progress pics soon, thanks for the encouragement - I hope some of you can post pics of your cabin - I like to get ideas for ours.

Is there pine growing there? What does? We have found that it is considerably cheaper and much more satisfying to do some selective timber harvesting and find a local guy with a portable bandsaw mill to saw it for you. Here they charge $125-$135/1000 bf. Here, we also found a guy with a planing/moulding business (I don't remember what he charged). He made all of our 1" select into tongue and groove and window/baseboard trim. We have some oak, pine, hemlock, white ash, poplar, birch t&g. The bathroom is cedar tongue and groove with a black ash t&g floor. All of this was taken off our own land. I think the popple is the best looking. The outer wood is almost white, while the heartwood is red.
Anyway, it adds a bit of pride to camp when you know that some of the materiel is "homemade".
It does take a "little" more work on your part.

That is a great idea ostdc - I think I'll look into having some of the cherry, or yellow birch done into the trim for our bedroom.
