I have never questioned the safety of the deer meat that I have shot & butchered.
Is deer meat always safe? Or, should I consider cwd & other things that might taint it?
Just wondering.
I've never gotten sick from any deer meat.

I suggest that as long as the meat is well cared for there would not normally be a problem unless you live/hunt in an area that is now prone to cwd (don't know about Ohio) if you do, then you should probably contact your local DNR or game biologist and ask them.

Unless the deer had suffered an earlier wound that was infected in an edible meat area, i would say its fine. CWD has never been recorded jumping from cervids to humans. Don't worry about it. I would eat deer from a hot zone area. we hunt in the zones outside the hot zone, the Herd Reduction Zone. i'll eat everything we kill. not even in the back of my mind.
