RE: new guy needs advice
I don't have access to private land, and I don't have any friends who hunt, so I am looking for places to go. I've read that the best area for deer in Cali is the northern part of the state, and also in the Sierras in the east. I have also read that one should never hunt alone. Especially as a rookie. I assume there are clubs, people you can go in a group with. My next step will be to check out the local gun club, and talk to some folks there. In the meantime, I'll be back on this board. I am going through this website bit by bit, and I love how much info there is. Thanks for all the responses. I'm learning a lot already. Thanks guys!

RE: new guy needs advice
I just read the above advice and it looks great to me. I have been helping people with this very question for almost thirty years now so I will add my opinion. Hunting is a wonderful sport. It just seems right that you should buy a 22 lr because its a great practice gun and a whole lot of fun to shoot. A 12 gauge shotgun is a wonderful investment as well. If you are recoil shy at first, you can buy light loads and then graduate on up to the 3 1/2" loads when hunting turkey or geese. If you want to shoot varmits, the 223 is hard to beat. Its cheap to feed with over the counter ammo and easy to reload. If you are going to hunt big game I recomend that people either get a 30-06. The range of ammo available for this gun is outstanding and available almost everywhere. An even better combination in my opinion, if you can scrape up the cash is a 270 win and a 338 win mag. With these two you are equipped. Any way you look at it 4 or at the most 5 guns will let you hunt all over the USA and up north too. The problem is, once you get the fever, 5 guns may not seem like near enough. Have fun and keep reading, there is a lot of good advice on this site.
