a litle confused
I know that you get a lot of stupid questions so here’s one more. Please bear (pun) with me. I have been hunting small game for a long time but this coming season I am taking my son on our first dear hunt. I want him to have a good time and look forward to the next season so I have been studying videos and reading books. I have to say that the hunting community are among the finest people that I have had the pleasure to deal with. Every question that I have posted received numerous and invaluable information and I thank you for your hospitality. Now for the dumb question: If I am hunting from a tree-stand I should be downwind right? Yet if I am using scent lures wouldn’t I want them to be upwind so that the buck is lured to the area? Do I setup up wind and use a commercial scent masker and count on disguising the human scent. I am a little confused. Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

well you said you're taking your son "dear" hunting, the first thing to do is not tell your wife!
Now if you're takeing him "deer" hunting, you may want to go to the libary and look up some old articals. You sound like you're heading in the right track(pun).

TopCop, Get downwind and stay as scent free as you can! I would put out the attractant upwind or in a circle around your stand. I would not put the attractant too near to where you are, as the deer may wind you or see you when they are looking for the source of the smell!
Attractants and cover scents are good, but as I said get as scent free as you can be and watch the wind! You can't count on fooling a deer's nose too often!

TopCop you are right in setting up down wind, be it from a bedding area, food source. or a well used trail. However it is equally as important to try and keep your self as free of human odors as possible. As far as scent lure I try to set out my scent canisters all around my stand about 10 yards from the base of my tree. So that which ever way the wind shifts the deer may pick up the scent.

Wash your clothes with scent free detergent. Shower and wash your hair with scent free soap the green kind. Then spray all your gear and clothes with scent killer spray. Being scent free is an all or nothing strategy. Around here you can watch smoke and tell that the wind changes directions several times in an hour on most days. I like to do like Frank says and use doe in heat scent in at least 3 different places around my stand but not too close to you. Doe in heat scent works best just before the actual rut. Once the real does all go into heat there will be too many hot does smelling up the woods for a big buck to come to your lure. I have had good luck when I put my doe in heat scent where the prevailing wind for that day will blow the scent into the area where I think the bucks will be. Like their bedding area. If you see a buck dont breathe with your mouth open or it might smell your breath or your toothpaste. I chew spearmint gum and it doesnt seem to scare the deer away. Sometimes it attracts them. Dont tell anyone else my secrets.

Is a dear a cross between a deer and a bear?<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
