A kid I had in school about 20 years ago started a chapter of Farmer' s and Hunter' s Feeding the Hungry. Donated deer are processed and given to food banks. I have a life license so donating an extra deer doesn' t cost me $24 for the tag. I get to hunt more, because I don' t have to worry about what to do with the deer. I already have two in my freezer from bow season, so my first gun deer went to the program. I figure to donate one or two more if I get them. I wish all of you reading this would consider doing the same. It will make you feel good.

Yeah they just started a program in our area this year, but the hunter has to pay the processing bill, but they will also reimburse you up to 25 dollars if you donate the whole deer and fill out the papers and mail them in. I wish they could get enough sponsors to take care of the bill, I would gladly donate some deer to them but I hate to get stuck with the processing fee.

I think it is a great program but for me, I just can' t do it. I can' t see killing something just to donate it. I donate in many other ways so I don' t feel guilty that I don' t do my part for the homeless and other charities. Several friends do this and it seems to me that they donate a deer just to get out of butchering it. They always say, I have enough venison. I ask myself why shoot it then. If it is for you great but is isn' t for me. I hunt for other reasons.
PS - I am also funny about taking any meat from others. I don' t ever accept any.
Just my $.02.

Deer donation is a very noble thing to do. My wife and I couldn' t store, let alone eat four deer (state bag limit east of the Blue Ridge without bonus tags) per season.
I wouldn' t exactly call myself Mr. Charity, but there are people close to home that would really enjoy some good venison during the holiday season.
For those hunters in Virginia, please visit the Hunters for the Hungry web site at http://www.h4hungry.org/ for more info on how to help.

We' ve had this conversation at the camp a few times. In our Wildlife Managment Unit (WMU) there are far to many deer and they are becoming a nusiance to farmers and a danger to motorists and this year they are again issuing additional tags to those that want them. So what this tells me is that there is a surplus of deer. However due to Canadian laws any meat not for personal use must be goverment inspected and in most cases slaughtered at a goverment slaughterhouse. Therefore we have no program in place in Canada to provide the poor or needing with fresh meat that has been harvested by caring private citizens.
How popular are the programs in your areas? Are city folk ok with eating Bambi?

BIGSCRAPE, that' s a real shame.
As far as city folk eating venison? The closest major city to me is DC, and I' d bet that they' d let it all rot before eating it. Not that anybody hunts, since handguns are banned outright, and all longarms must be registered and stored dissasembled in a locked container at all times. Needless to say, the only gun owners are the gangs and professional criminals.
