Most of the deer I've shot went down to a '06, and I will continue to hunt with it. BUT, IMHO the nod for fave for whitetails goes to the .270

I have shot them with everything from 22 hornet to 458 win mag. Favorite is the 270 Weatherby magnum. It is effective for everything on this continent, and a second poke is never necessary.

If you could only have one gun to kill deer from north, south, east to west - I would want a .270.

However I've killed most of my deer since I been out west with a .243 (smaller) & a 7MM RM (larger).

My favorite is 7MM 08. Started with a 30-30 then a 308, got a 243 and love it but the 7MM 08's are set for thick cedar swamps and across cranberry bogs.

Jerry d, that would be a Marlin Guide gun made before Rem bought Marlin.

I don't even know how many different calibers I've used on whitetails. I've taken them with rifles, pistols, bows, crossbows, black powder and shotguns firing both buckshot and slugs. But if I had to pick one as my overall favorite it would probably be my 7mm Mag simply for the fact that I've had it since I was 13 and have done most of my hunting with it. I've hunted in more than 10 states with it, 3 Canadian provinces and it has gone to Africa 5 times. It has always worked and will continue to do so for as long as I can pull the trigger.

I killed most of the deer ive gotten with my 300 H&H mag. mainly because it was the only rifle I owned at the time. ive retired it and use an 06 now.

Oldtimr...don't know why but I've got a strong itch for a 1895. Might have to scratch that itch soon.

Like flags, I've taken whitetail across this country with everything legal. In my aging years, I am getting a little more recoil sensitive with various shoulder injuries. With that in mind, my latest favorite cartridge is the 7mm.08. Out of my TC it's got more than enough juice to reach out to 300 yards and drop any whitetail in it's tracks as long as I do my part. It's dropped a few Elk as well. It's a reloaders dream cartridge given all the bullet selections out there for 7mm.
