For woods hunting in the Northeast where bear is open I have used my 358 M 99F shooting the 200 gr Silvertip since 1966 the most.

For open land my current favorite is a custom mauser 30-06. I am primarily shooting the 155 gr Berger VLD's in .30's.

I've shot deer with a .243, .30-30, .300 savage, .30-06, 7.62X54R, and .44mag, also with a crossbow and a compound bow. Very difficult to pick a "favorite" but my Go-To gun when I'm getting desperate has always been my Remmy 700 in .30-06.

My most used rifle for whitetails was a 8mm Mauser my Grandfather picked up along the way (German war surplus). I bought a 7-08 a couple years ago, and love it, but since I'm in shotgun-only land right now, haven't had it out for whitetails.

I know that there is not much difference between the .243 Win. and the 6MM Rem. Both will kill any Whitetail on the planet, with ease! I just favor the 6MM Rem. Maybe it's because the 6MM was my first deer rifle caliber.

6MM Rem for me as well with a good 100 grain bullet and you are good to go. Close second for me would be sticks and strings.
