I've seen a few deer and one cow elk shot with a Colt Python in .357. It did the job but I'd be more comfortable with something that has a little more bullet weight. I used to carry a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag and it tipped mule deer does over really well.

NM, here is another chart, it says most of the results came from a 5 or 5.5 inch barrel which would preclude rifles. Not arguing, just saying what is out there on the subject. Check out the double tap ammo, some higher numbers than BB. From Florida gun supply, balistics 101.

The stats Midway shows are identical numbers that Rockport put up from the Buffalo Bore website on his latter posts and I think they sound reasonable.

Read the thread carefully, you're misunderstanding the confusion.

I think we got this ironed out. I wasn't questioning the Buffalo Bore's data, just pointed out that Rockport's quoting of BB data was not accurate to the actual BB data sheets. Their website is kinda confusing and has rifle data charts at the top but aren't listed as such, so if you look at the top level chart, it's deceiving. The data he quoted later is the right stuff, but the 1800fps and 1800ft.lbs. isn't on the mark, even though it's really easy to make that mistake on their website.

Bottom line is this: 1200ft.lbs. is attainable with a 45colt case, 1800ft.lbs. is not.

If someone figured out a 30-32,000psi load in 45colt that could run 1800ft.lbs. in a handgun, I'd be shooting them tomorrow!

But the REAL Tier 3 stuff, like Buffalo Bore's loads, is more than enough to kill deer. He11, most of my deer I've killed with the Colt have been with plain jane WWB "Tier 1" standard stuff, and they're just as dead as the Tier 3 stuff delivers.

I myself do not think the 357 is enough for deer. if recoil is the problem with larger handguns, try the 41 mag. it can be loaded close to the 44 mag but without the heavy recoil of the 44.

A max loaded .357 magnum round with a 180 grain bullet is more than adequate for whitetail deer. Factory .357 ammo should be considered cautiously however, much of it is not designed for hunting medium sized game. I have found reloading for this caliber very worthwhile.

My ex-wife killed 4 deer, 3 does, 1 buck here in Il with my Ruger Security 6. I was handloading Blue Dot with Sierra 158 JHP's. She neck shot them and they were DRT. 1 in the ribs, and the buck she shot him just above base of tail and broke his back. Was aiming for back of his neck, was walking away. All shots were under 50yds.
