I bought in Win Model 70 in 2000 in 270 WSM. I think it's a great all around big game rifle for North America. It's super flat shooting. I have taken 4 deer I believe with it. The longest shot has only been about 60 -70 yds. 2 of 3 that were shot in the vitals resulted in bang flops. The other only ran about 20 yds. The two that were bang flops were shot mid way up though the lungs, but the hydroshock broke the spine resulting the in the bang flop. I have been shooting hand loads my dad has be making for me using 140 gr Horndy SST.

I love the WSM; I have some older guns, but all the new rifles I've bought in recent years have been short-mags. I have a Weatherby Vanguard .270 WSM synthetic stock I use as my whitetail gun here in PA. Also have a beautiful Winchester Model 70 Coyote laminated stock, stainless bull-barrel in .300 WSM used for big game and the open ranges out west (the thing is a cannon; and I originally wanted it in .325!), and a .243 super-short-mag. Wonderful calibers.
I love my Weatherby .270 WSM; the Vanguard packages are an outstanding value and aside from the .300, it's the most consistent shooting rifle I've used.

I bought my Browning A bolt .270 wsm in 2002, and love it. It's my go to gun. I have shot deer as close as 23 yards and as far as 325 yards with it. The only downfall is the ammo is more expensive, but if you shoot straight, it's not that big a deal. I shoot the 130 gr. Win. ballistic silvertip out of it. I know there are a lot of ballistic tip haters here, but I have had great success with them.

I have a Ruger 77 MKII all weather in 270WSM, I handload 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and have taken several deer with it. All have been one shot dead right there shots. It is good out to as far as you can accurately shoot. I have hit steel targets out to 400 meters with no issue. My personal limit on game though would be 300-350 yds. I think you be very happy. Practice, practice and practice some more.

The .270 WSM is not the same caliber as the .270... The .270 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum) packs considerably more punch than the .270.
I've shot a .270 most of my life (since 1966). I bought a Tikka .270 WSM 3 or 4 years ago. It's extremely accurate and obviously very flat shooting. It's probably a little more gun that what is needed for deer and antelope, but we hunt elk also from time to time and the added energy makes it a better elk cartridge than the .270. My son has latched on to the .270 WSM and uses it most of the time. If I buy another deer rifle I'll probably just stay with the .270. It's served me very well over the years, it doesn't kick as much, and the ammos is not nearly as expensive.
