Deer Hunt w/ Shotgun?

RE: Deer Hunt w/ Shotgun?
What kind of choke do you have??? Depending on you choke type will tell you what will fly out of it. One of my shotguns is an 870 Rem. with an 26" improved cylinder, it doesn' t hold a pattern past 25 yrds very well at all, but I can shoot slugs out of it and hit a 6 inch target all day long, ( if my shoulder could hold up ) and that is just with open sights. Now my mossberg is full choke and I use this one for my turkey gun because in being a full choke it will hold a tighter pattern at a further distance. I would say with 00 buck, a full choke will reach out and drop a deer out to 60-70 yrds.
The best way to find out is set up a large target and see what kind of pattern your gun has at various yardages. Good Luck, Bobby

I use a rem 1100 w/bushnell var scope and the longest with a slug 110 yds running, dropped him in its tracks. Also use a rem 870w/simmons prodiamond w/buckshot or slugs took one 45 yds using oobuck

Only killed a few deer with a shotgun, but the one I used was a remington 1187 with a rifled slug and a 3-9 leupold. One was at 30 yards and the other was 80 yds -shrug- can' t really give you a max range but I would say somewhere between 100-120 yards, maybe a little farther.

Hey people, ive been reading this board for a while and this if my first time actually posting. Im from ontario Canada and I' m 15. I got my first deer this year(last november), a doe.
As for your question, I use a model 1100 for deer too. I usually put a slug (your first shots usually the best one) then a buckshot for when its running or in thick brush then another slug. When I shot my deer last seasont the buck shot hit it in the neck and she dropped instantly. Shotguns are good for deer, but one thing I dont like is having to finish it with a slug...[][:' (]

Hunter......I have hunted for many years and have shot many, many deer with a shotgun. If you want to the best possible setup.....the best thing to do is get a rifled slug barrel. I don' t believe it really matters what kind of gun you are using, but the rifled slug barrel will make the biggest difference on distance and accuracy of your slug. I personally shoot a Rem 870 Special Purpose, RIFLED SLUG BARREL and shoot Federal Premium 3" mags. Just to give you an idea.....I can put them in a paper plate at 145 yards. Although, I don' t think that I have ever killed one over 60. Just because of my spots and setups. So once again.....the way to go is a rifled slug barrel. They are a bit spendy, but you won' t regret it. Good luck to you.

Hunter501, I hate to be the bearer of what may be bad news, but thought it should be brought to your attention that Mossberg advises against using slugs in their model 835 as the barrel is over-bored to 10 gauge specs and claim the slug may wobble and cause damage to it. Buckshot does work fine though and a few ammo makers offer 00 buck in 3 1/2" with 18 pellets and a powerful kick!
