Default Deer Hunt w/ Shotgun?

what all exactly do you need to hunt deer with a shotgun? I will be using a Remington 1100 if possible or a mossberg 835(both 12 gague, if it matters). What setup do i need for a sucessful hunt? Also, whats the max distance Im looking at for good accuary and a quick humanane kill?

I hunt with a shot gun in Iowa, and I use an 1100 with rifled barrels. One has a Tasco Pro-Point, and the other has a 3-9 scope. My shortes kill was 4 ft from the end of the barrel and the longest kill is 150 yards and I have several at 75 to 80 yards running, so forget the 65 to 75 yard limit. If you can afford it, go with the 1100, I' ve shot the same gun for 31 years and the only time I' ve had any problem was when I did not keep it clean.

I have a Remmington 870 that i hunt with (in 12 guage). I have a rifled slug barrel for deer w/ iron sights. I have never needed to make a shot over 25 yards when deer hunting but i can put 5 shots in a paper plate at 100 yards. Good luck to ya.

I have 4 shotguns--Mossberg 835, S&W 916-A, Rem 1100, and SLE o/u, all 12ga.
I hunt deer with the Mossberg and S&W with 00 buck. My closest kill was 8 feet, and the farthest out was about 35 yards. You didn' t say if you were gonna be using slugs or buckshot, but I don' t think I would be comfortable, personally, going any farther out than 50 yards with buckshot. I' ve never used slugs, so on that I' m not sure.

When I shotgun hunted I used an 11-87 with a Leupold 2x7 shotgun scope, mounted on a cantelever rifled barrel. Definiately go with an auto if you can as it makes sighting in much more enjoyable by soaking up a good bit of recoil. A pump gun with slugs will kick the snot out of you at the rifle range! I picked up 6 different boxes of sabot ammo and went to the range to see what shot best, ended up with Federals and can put 5 rds in about a 3 inch circle at 100 yards. If the situation was perfect I would go out to 150 yds with this combo but not much farther due to slug ballistics. A 12ga slug is a very deadly round within reasonable range, but drops like a brick past 125yds or so.
With a smoothbore and Foster style slugs I would keep it to under 100 yds as a general rule.

If your new to shotgun hunting you should limit yourself to 75 yards or less. Like with any gun take it to the range and shoot, find out which bullet you like best and just get used to firing the gun.

I use a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum with 3 1/2 Federal 00. I have a pattern master choke tube and I feel comfortable shooting at a standing deer out to 60 to 70 yards. If I can not get the deer stop I feel comfortable out to 40 to 50 yards. I killed my biggest buck to date in 01 with a 75 yard one shot and the deer only went 35 yards or so. Good luck..

1187, cantilever barrel, 4 power Simmons (turkey scope acually), and Winchester Partition Gold sabots.
