RE: Stealing Treestands?
I have never had a stand stolen. My secret? I've never left a stand in the woods. Most of the tactics mentioned will help if someone stumbles upon your stand unprepared, but i have friends that have had stands stolen that were locked to the tree and the steps/climbing sticks pulled. It was clear who ever did it came prepared to steal the stand. If someone enters the woods with the sole intent of stealing a stand, the only way to stop him for sureis for it not to be there.

My buddy had a 2-man ladder stand stolen last year. He found outwhen he took his boy with him for the first time. We think we know who did it. There's a local processor that sells used stands. He says he buys them from hunters at the end of each season. I put a ladder up this year and chained it up good.

My hunting location this year is an hour away from home. I hunt public land. I bought my first ladder stand this year. I figure the only way for me is to go late in the afternoon the day before I hunt. Set it up and not leave until dark. I'm sure it'll be there the next morning for my use but will have to disassemble it and take it with me when I leave. It makes it hard on these old bones but that's my reality.
