Who Shoots First?

I'm 60. I hope I have at least a few more good years ?!?! My dad is 84. He gets the first shot and last shot every time ... and as many in between as it might take.

I actually had this exact situation with my Dad back in 1990, I was 19. My Dad and I rushed over to my Uncle's farm to watch an alphalfa field for the last hour of light. My Dad and I are laying behind a dirt mound and said you get the first shot Dad. Well as it turned out the buck came from the only angle that would have my Dad shooting over me. So, I shot the buck before he stepped back in the woods. I remember that like it was yesterday, it's hard to believe that was over 15 years ago already!!

I never shoot first, if I am in a stand with another hunter it's because I'm helping them...I have had 2 occasions when I did shoot first, once when the hunter had a Simmons and couldn't see his crosshairs, another when the shot was past 200 yards and the hunter admitted it was too far for him to shoot...
I've also had a couple of occasions where I did shoot 2nd, but that's another story...

Usually we set up zones. One guy shoots to the left, the other to the right.
Or you could go by who sees it first, or just set up before hand which is shooting first. You DON'T want to have to figure it out once the deer is in sight.

When hunting with my sons, I prefer to have them have the first chance at a big buck. I believe that it will help solidifying the sport for their future as hunters. I get a real kick out of it also.

I shot a great buck this year. I'd gladly give the shot to my father. Of course he'd probably insist I shoot. LOL
Any time spent would be awesome big buck or not. plan it out and enjoy the time together. I know you will.

Let me first say that I didn't think this would be a subject that got this much attention.I suppose a lot of hunters have a strong connection to their fathers when it comes to deer hunting. I asked this question withmy answer already in mind. I would let my father shoot first if he had the right shooting angle. So far I have taken the largest buck off of our farm so I would love for him to have the chance at something larger than what he has taken.
As far as why we would want to sit together has little to do with taking a big buck. As I am now finishingmy college career we are once again having time to get back to the way things werebefore life got so busy. Hunting isn't just about tagging a big buck. For us it is more about spending some time together doing what we love to do the most.
