Tell the good Doctor ..in your opinion which is a more effective way to hunt the rut in your neck of the woods ...and what state are you in?

bottlenecks or doe bedding areas in my area of Pa.

in the midwest, i like to hunt (much like anyone else) where the does congregate, which is usually at the food sources (corn, soybeans, etc.)!!

simple, deep woods. when bucks are rutting and chasing doe's, they could care less about food plots and eating. this is why bucks are thinner than normal and "beat up" looking when observed or shot during the rut. if a buck in rut is seen on a food plot, it's because there is a hot doe out there feeding.

I don't care if the doe is in the bush or in a field......... the bucks will be there. No the buck is not there to eat but if the doe is there the bucks will be there.
I don't hunt anywhere near a field either....... all big woods. If I had my choice I would be on a small field or food plot......, but I hunt public land in the big woods.

Hunting from a truck with a spotlight would easily (if it were leagal) the most efffective way to hunt bucks in the rut in British Columbia....
Another effective means, if it were legal, would driving up and down the Hope, Princeton Highway and running over them with your truck, when the seasons overyour vehicalinsurance will repair or relace for a small fee...

I chose deep woods, but i have killed just as many over food plots during the rut. I also ride around in the club and could kill bucks out of the window. Saw a 6 point in rut this past weekend I could have killed easily with a firearm (it was the last weekend of bow).I better not get a chance like that during muzzleloader this weekend because I will take it.

In NW Wisconsin, where I hunt, it is a 50/50 mix of fields and woods. I love to hunt on funnels/ridges by doe bedding areas. My best luck, and that of my hunting group, has always been in these spots, not really by field edges. Our last two P&Y bucks came midday on these types of areas. Most of our Rut setups are on spots we beleive a buvk will troll for does. So.....we set up on spots that lead to the does.

We usually hunt all day btw.

Hunting the edge of fields and food plots.
This time of year the does are feeding whether the boys are or not, and deer are naturally "edge" critters. I hunt the rolling hills of Southern Indiana.
