A lot of posts say they need the meat, but isn't it cheaper to buy beef?

To those about to read this post my intentions were not to open this to someone who is narrow minded. I, myself, am very open minded. Does Saint drive or is he intune with the less polluting bicycle?

good topic buck. im curious to see responses on this. let me add to this. doesnt beef taste better? or is venision an aquired tast. here is how i break down my harvest. steaks, ground and tender loins. I BBQ the tenderloins, make jerkey from the steaks and chili with the ground. mabye i just a poor excuse for a cook, or just dont have the know how, but I just cant get the game tast out of the meat to make a good roast or stew. although, i can make a beef stew or roast a piece of beef that will knock your socks off.

For most of us-no,the meat isn't when there grocerystores on every other block. For me personally,I'd rather eat venison than beef.I like the way it tastes,it's healthier and I get great satisfaction knowing my time outdoors will provide for my family. If I were a better wing shot,I wouldn't buy chicken, either.I can't see that beef is cheaper-a bullet costs me .75cents and I butcher my own.

I don't buy fancy hunting clothes or boots, my bow is cheap, and pretty old. I go thru a few arrows and blades each year. I cut up my own deer. tags cost me about 70$ and I shot 6 deer. I am pretty confident my meat is cheaper than beef. I can cook it such that you'd never tell the difference between the 2. Not all recipes allow for this but some. I haven't bought beef in years, but for a package here and there.

A one year, buy all the gear, shoot one or 2 deer and it's the most expensive meat out there. But a practical hunter who shoots many deer and cuts them himself, it pretty cheap.

For some maybe. For me it is a little pay back or reward for something i love to do. I don't look at as savings, or my mainstay for food, but rather a hobby of sorts. I enjoy the whole experience and love the meat.

For those who say they can't get the wild out, try marinating it over night in an acid, sweet and salt solution. I presonally like red wine, brown sugar, Seasoning Salt, Montreal Steak Spice and Garlic powder. Then when I do my roast I put about 3/4 of cup of red wine and 1-2 cups of water in a roaster(cook at 200, then 10 minutes a side with the lid off at 325) or slow cooker. I will season it and stuff some garlic cloves in the actual roast. I never have had a complaint and is not to hard either. Just an idea. (Other Marinates: Beer and Worchester, Orange Juice, Tomateo's, Pepsi or coke works as well) Just experiment and I use the tastes I enjoy as my basis than branch out to the unknowns.

Lots of good suggestions here, and a variety of ways to look at the topic. My 2 bits worth:

1) Venison doesn't have the marbled fat that beef does and is therefore better for you (I can see the debate on its way <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>).

2) Venison doesn't get shots of various types of medication like beef does.

3) As already mentioned, once you're set up, the cost of venison is minimal. This is even more so if you acquire a moose or elk. Actually it seems to me I looked at a package of steaks in the store recently and they wanted something like $12/lb for it. Yowsers!

4) Hunting is an enjoyable leisure activity and I choose to spend money on it instead of trips to Vegas, curling, collecting stamps, or whatever. So the cost per pound isn't an issue.

5) I raised beef for years but prefer wild game any day. Almost without exception, if venison is handled correctly, it will not have a gamey taste. I did, however, once get a disgustingly stinky rutting mulie buck.

Skeeter made a good point. Is a great reward for doing somthing we love to do. I personally hunt for the meat.

I dont get to hunt as much as every one els being that I live out side of the US and travel every year to our land in Ga.

When I do harvest deer man what a treat. Also, the meat is more lean and a heck of alot healthier for people to consume. No comicals! Just good natural untouched meat when taken from the woods.

There's my two cents worth.

KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON!

I haven't bought steak in over five years. Venison is AALLOOTT cheaper for me to get then store bought meat. I do all of my own cutting like a few others here, this can save money by itself. The deer meat is better for you, less chemicals and fat. Even if the farmer doesn't use chemicals the meat company will.

Deer meat good, me love soo much. Not sure if its more expensive than beef. I pay like 60 bucks for a license and if i harvest all the deer i can legally take, than that is a great deal of meat.

I don't put the money I spend deer hunting against the meat. Yeah, if you factor in the cost of your gear and all of the supplies you buy and then put it up against the meat you get out of it - if any - pound for pound beef would come out much cheaper. But if you look at the money you spend as a vacation expense (after all that's really what you deer hunt is, isn't it?) then the meat you get out of it is actually the icing on the cake. Then it looks pretty cheap.

On a clear day you can see you're going to have to work forever
