with the peep sights on my 1917 remington i can shoot 2" groups at 100 yards. and thats a completly stock gun thats 80years old using the cheapest ammo we could fine at the gun show ($17 a box of 50). assuming he can shoot thats no problem at all. i dont understand why people think you have to have a scope you shoot small groups.
also there is luck, he may have hit it by luck though i would give him the benefit of the doubt

I made heart shot a deer last week with a shotgun with no scope. Anyone can with practice. Find the load that works right out of your gun, and practice with it at different ranges, and you'll be fine.

I took a buck last year with a shotgun and iron sights. he was running fom my left to my right and away from me towards my two o'clock. i caught him right behind his last rib and into his chest. i pulverized his heart and one lung. when the bullet hit him it flipped him over and he dropped on the spot.

Up until recently, deer rifles all came with open sights out of the box.My remington 722 still has the open sights I did mount a scope on it but I guess it's all about personal preferences if I felt comfortable with open sights I would stick with them.
It's the operator that messes up....not the equipment.Have confidence in yourself and shoot straight.

Don't under estimate an open sight shooter in the hands of someone who can use one. In one of my arsenals I have a 870 Remington with a 26" smooth bore barrel in which I use th Williams peep sight, this is absolutely deadly at 100 yrds as most of my shots are sometimes no further than this, as I usually hunt the thickets in search of Mr. Big. You have to keep in mind that since you are throwing such a large piece of lead out there, its a little more forgiveing, but you gotta practice and know your weapon and then match it to the game.
