Land the first shot in the kill zone with certanty, then we all better quit hunting because that will never be achieavable.
Oh for goodness sakes no one is trying to say that you have to be perfect. Just the max rangeat whichyou are consistent. When the best of the best out there cannot consistently put their first shot in the vitals at 800 yards under field conditions then I think thats a strong indication that it's just too freaking far.

A 400 yard shot is the max I will try with my rifle,
And there you have your own answer. I'm sure there is a reason you have choosen 400 as your current maximum. Like perhaps it is the max distance at which you are "CONSISTENT".

I thought long and hard about adding anything to this thread but thought I should weigh in anyways. I spent the better part of my youth on a high school olympic style rifle team shooting .22 at 50 feet and over 3 years became increasingly good. I have practiced out to 500 yards and at one point in my youth spent a day shooting at close to 1000 yards with a couple of different rifles. Shooting deer at these distances is unheard of in my circle of friends but I am not in the least bothered by the fact that there are a few select people out there who decide to hunt this way. In my opinion it is far better to hunt this way then in a fenced enclosure! Now, do I believe that anyone should be out there shooting deer or any other species at these kind of ranges, NO! But if someone where to practice and put at least a 500 rounds through their rifle at these kinds of ranges, and was consistent then I would not be bothered because I know that they have practiced out to that range.

These guys have easily put a 1000 rounds through these rifles! They are highly specialized and obviously have the skills necessary to shoot at that distance. I envy their skills, and think how confident you would be at 200 yards if you practiced at these kind of distances!

If you take those kind of long shots and there is no way to consider them anything but long shots, know that when you miss you point of aim because of taking that risk that you are responsible for the animals you wound and loose. It comes down to stroking egos at this point and that's a poor example to set. Filming it and spreading it around the world is even worse. I don't respect that one bit.

for me, that would be hugely unethical, for them, who can say????? I beleive they are 100 times better shots than I, and having observed a couple of guys who could do that, my hat goes off to them. given no other information, it is hunting(how can anyone say it is not? there is no line that can be drawn given equipment and human variances), and they were perfectly clean kills, perfect hits. i wouldnt want them shooting at me

although that one sure looked like a yellow lab. that tail was 15 inches long MINIMUM

Nice shooting.....but not really what I consider hunting. Each to his own.

Some folks just don't get it. Using a rifle that shoots BMG (ammunition by design for Browning .50 cal. machine gun) that has been used for many decades and countless wars for everything from shooting down enemy planes to penetrating armored enemy vehicles and sniper rifles for hunting game is like fishing with tnt. Yeah I suppose you can say "it works", but it's not sporting and really not dependable to think you regularly get a clean kill of a big game animal when you're shooting 800 to some over 1000 yds.

This article says, "John Yenason, who is among the top competitive .50 shooters, says that before showing up at a match you should be able to put five shots in a minute of angle at 1,000 yards—a 10-inch group." A competitive shooter putting 5 shots in 1 min. of angle under ideal conditions leaves you with shots in a 10 in. group. How may wounded and badly blow apart Elk or other big game animals will it take to convince you that this is a very bad thing for the rest of hunting and hunters?

The 50 BMG is illegal to hunt big game in our state. I for one am glad it is. The country in eastern ND is as flat as a table top.

I didn't read through all 13 pages of argument, so I don't know if this has been state. In my opinion those guys look like ex-military. If that is the case then we may be talking about a whole different level of expertise.

Bash on.
